InSync Dance Theatre Concert Feb. 6-7

InSync Dance Theatre, Michigan's only professional tap and jazz company, will present its annual concert on Wednesday-Thursday, Feb. 6-7, at 8 p.m. at Hope College at the Knickerbocker Theatre.

The company will present all new repertory.

The concert includes a special vocal and dance performance to be given by visiting student artists from Niagara University under the direction of Terri Filips, a Hope College alumna and assistant professor of theatre Niagara University.

The company is premiering choreography set by Clifton Brown, Hope College's newest dance faculty member. Since his arrival from Rome, Brown has produced "Tango," set to the music of Astor Piazzolla, and "Essence," an intense, driving and edgy jazz piece.

Company co-founder Dawn McIlhargey Wigert offers "States of Dysfunction," a moody, dramatic and tragic modern-jazz work, "Angel" and "Fallin," a romantic solo set to popular vocalist Alicia Keys.

Rosanne DeVries, in collaboration with Grand Rapids choreographer Teresa Dewey, presents "Sole Play," a polyrhythmic orchestrated tap dance set to the drums of Grooters and Beal, and a more traditional tap work to the jazz standard "Tuxedo Junction."

Dolores Sanchez, a Hope College sophomore and dance major from Gary, Ind., challenges the audience with an a cappella tap piece making clear the statement: "it is all about the rhythm." Sanchez's piece is the first student- choreographed work to be included in the company repertory.

Finally, the company "Just Plays Around," dancing to the music of Billie Holiday in a fun, light tap dance choreographed by guest Terri Filips.

The concert will conclude with dancers and audience members alike joining together to dance the "Shim Sham." Tap shoes are welcome, but not required.

Tickets for Hope College's resident jazz and tap company's concert will be available at the Knickerbocker Theatre box office one hour before show time. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

The Knickerbocker Theatre is located in downtown Holland at 86 E. 8th St.
