All-MIAA Football Honors Announced

MIAA football champion Hope has placed 13 players on the all-conference teams announced Monday by league coaches.

The Flying Dutchmen captured their fourth league championship in seven years and the 18th in school history this fall. Hope will compete in the NCAA Division III playoffs beginning Saturday, Nov. 22 at Wheaton, Ill.

Senior quarterback Phil Butler of Howard City, Mich. (Tri-County HS) was voted the league's most valuable offensive player. He threw 29 touchdown passes this season, including 19 in league games as the Flying Dutchmen won five of six league games and were 7-3 overall.

Butler is one of eight Hope players on the All-MIAA first teams. He is joined on offense by sophomore tackle Josh DeHaan of Fremont, Mich. (Fremont HS), senior receiver Joe VerSchueren of Muskegon, Mich. (Reeths Puffer HS), and senior tailback Dan Bloemers of Caledonia, Mich. (Caledonia HS).

Hope's All-MIAA first team honorees on defense include senior end Matt Beaver of Gladwin, Mich. (Gladwin HS), senior linebqacker Bill Rozema of Holland, Mich. (Holland HS), junior linebacker Paul Hoeksema of Grand Rapids, Mich. (Creston HS), and junior defensive back Andy Snyder of Berrien Springs, Mich. (Berrien Springs HS).

Named to the All-MIAA second team were junior offensive tackle Mike Verwys of Otsego, Mich. (Otsego HS), senior tight end Scott Jeschke of Gobles, Mich. (Gobles HS), junior receiver Jeff Eldersveld of Grand Rapids, Mich. (East Grand Rapids HS), senior defensive back Brian Fielhauer of Byron, Mich. (Byron HS), and junior punter Seth Kovarik of Traverse City, Mich. (Traverse City Central HS).

Receiving coaches' honorable mention were senior Travis Jager of Kalamazoo, Mich. (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Tim Keur of Hudsonville, Mich. (Hudsonville HS), junior Jason Misner of Kalamazoo, Mich. (Parchment HS), junior Bryan Scheffers of Portage, Mich. (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Dan Schofield of Portage, Mich. (Portage Central HS), junior Jake Schrock of Clarksville, Mich. (Clarksville HS), freshman Andy Serrano of Holland, Mich. (Holland HS), and junior Matt Thorne of Vermontville, Mich. (Maple Valley HS).
