Fall Sports MIAA Players of the Week

FOOTBALL
Sophomore Andrew Schofield of Mendham, N.J. has been named the MIAA special teams player of the week for the second time this season. Last Saturday in a 45-33 victory over Kalamazoo he was perfect on six extra points and booted a 31-yard field goal in Hope's 45-33 win over Kalamazoo. He also punted three times for a 35.7-yard average and kicked off eight times for a 54-yard average. Schofield is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and in his career.

MEN'S SOCCER
Sophomore midfielder Shaun Groetsema from Augusta (Galesburg-Augusta HS) has been named the MIAA men's soccer defensive player of the week for the second time this season. Groetsema led the Hope defense as the Flying Dutchmen defeated Alma, 2-1 , and Adrian, 6-0, to move into first place in the MIAA heading into the season's final week. With Groetsema playing a key role, the Flying Dutchmen have allowed only seven goals in 12 league games this season.

FOOTBALL
Kyle Warren, a sophomore from Grandville (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), is the Defensive Player of the Week. He made 13 tackles, including five solos, in Hope's 7-6 loss to Adrian. He also set up a Flying Dutchmen field goal with a 43-yard interception return early in the game. Warren is being honored as Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career.

MEN'S SOCCER
Justin Bailey, a senior from Portage (Portage Northern HS), is the Co-Defensive Player of the Week. He played solid all-around games as Hope posted a pair of MIAA victories, defeating Trine, 1-0, and Albion, 5-3. He also assisted on the game's only goal against Trine and added an assist in the win over Albion. Bailey, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, has been a key player on a Hope defense that has held MIAA teams to six goals in 10 games.

VOLLEYBALL
Cassidy Bulthuis, a junior from Nunica (Spring Lake HS), is the Player of the Week. She spearheaded the offense for the MIAA-leading Flying Dutch with 31 kills and a hitting percentage of .556 as Hope swept three consecutive conference matches for the week. She had 12 kills in 19 attempts for a hitting percentage of .632 in a three-set sweep of Kalamazoo. For the week, Bulthuis added 18 digs, seven blocks, and two service aces. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

VOLLEYBALL
Outside hitter Jacie Fiedler has been named the MIAA Player of the Week. A junior from Richmond, Ill. (Richmond Burton HS), Fielder slammed home 15 kills and had a hitting percentage of .565 in leading the league-leading Flying Dutch to an MIAA sweep of Olivet. Fiedler leads the MIAA in hitting percentage (.387) and is among the leaders nationally in NCAA Division III. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season.

FOOTBALL
Linebacker Zach Jones, a junior from Three Rivers (Three Rivers HS), has been named the defensive player of the week by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Jones made 17 tackles, including seven solo stops, in leading a Flying Dutchmen defense that held Albion to 27 rushing yards in a 14-6 win over the Britons. Jones had 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Three fall sports athletes have been honored as MIAA players of the week. Two of the honorees are football players and the third is a men's soccer player.

FOOTBALL
Kyle Warren, a sophomore from Grandville (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), is the football defensive player of the week. Hemade 11 tackles, including eight solo stops, in the Flying Dutchmen's 32-20 loss to nationally-ranked Wheaton, Ill. Warren, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, also broke up two passes.

FOOTBALL
Josh Echtinaw, a sophomore from Alto (Caledonia HS), is the football special teams player of the week. He returned three kickoffs for 111 yards, including a 62-yard return to set up a touchdown, in Hope's loss to Wheaton. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time in his career.

MEN'S SOCCER
Shaun Groetsema, a sophomore from Augusta (Galesburg-Augusta HS), is the men's soccer defensive player of the week. He anchored the Hope defense in leading the Flying Dutchmen to a pair of wins to open MIAA play, 1-0 over Kalamazoo and 2-1 over Trine. Groetsema, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, also assisted on the tying goal in the win over Trine.

Three Hope student-athletes, two of them volleyball players, have been honored as MIAA players of the week.

FOOTBALL
Andrew Schofield, a sophomore from Mendham, N.J. (Mendham HS), is the MIAA football special teams player of the week. He was 6-for-6 on extra points, including one that tied the game with 17 seconds remaining and sent the game into overtime, and added a 22-yard field goal in his first collegiate game as the Flying Dutchmen fell to Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 52-45, in double overtime.

VOLLEYBALL
Jacie Fiedler, a junior from Richmond, Ill. (Richmond Burton HS) is the MIAA volleyball player of the week. She slammed home 15 kills for a .464 hitting percentage in leading the Flying Dutch to a five-set MIAA victory over Saint Mary's. She also delivered 52 kills in four matches in earning a spot on the All-Tournament team at the Border Battle tournament hosted by Wittenberg, Ohio, leading Hope to a 3-1 record. It's the first time in Fiedler's career she has been named MIAA Player of the Week.

VOLLEYBALL
Andrea Helminiak, a senior from Maumee, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), is the MIAA volleyball specialty player of the week for the sixth time in her career. She distributed 43 assists, added 12 digs and served up four aces in Hope's win over Saint Mary's. She also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the Border Battle, dishing out 152 assists (10.1 per game) and adding 43 digs (2.9 per game).

Three Hope athletes have named Players of the Week by the
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

FOOTBALL
Steve Hazekamp is the special teams player of the week. A senior from Fruitport (Fruitport HS), he booted field goals of 33 and 20 yards and averaged 43 yards on three punts in Hope's 28-25 loss to Illinois Wesleyan. Hazekamp also extended his
streak of consecutive extra points made to 19, dating back to last season. He is being honored for the second time in his career.

MEN'S SOCCER
John Herbert is the defensive player of the week., A senior from from Culver, Ind. (Culver Academies), Herbert anchored the Flying Dutchmen defense as they scored back-to-back shutouts, blanking Goshen, Ind. 3-0, and Wilmington, Ohio, 2-0. He is
being honored for the second time in his career.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Tricia Bajema is the offensive player of the week.A freshman from Grandville (Grandville HS), Bajema scored three goals and assisted on a fourth in leading the Flying Dutch to a 4-3 victory over Elmhurst, Ill. Her goal with three minutes remaining,
set up by a corner kick, put Hope ahead to stay.
