Iron & Wine to Perform on Jan. 28

The Hope College Concert Series will feature Iron & Wine, with opening guest artist Judson Claiborne, on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 9 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

Iron & Wine, the stage name of Sam Beam, will give an unaccompanied performance to headline the night, drawing from Beam's extensive and highly acclaimed discography.

Two of Iron & Wine's three studio albums were chosen as "Best New Music" by "Pitchfork Magazine."  The magazine described Iron & Wine's latest studio release, "The Shepherd's Dog," as "... the kind of record that just keeps pulling you back with its dreamlike flow and attention to detail."

"Spin Magazine" has described Beam as "a fearlessly accessible songwriter, framing his melancholy in concrete imagery and solid, inviting melodies. He writes with the self-confidence of a man at peace with his gauzy gifts."

Iron & Wine's 12-disc repertoire includes tracks such as "Such Great Heights," featured in the film "GardenState"; "The Trapeze Swinger," featured in the film "In Good Company"; and, most recently, "Flightless Bird, American Mouth," featured in the soundtrack of the 2008 blockbuster, "Twilight."

Also performing will be Judson Claiborne, a Chicago-based, folk-rock singer-songwriter.

Tickets are $25 for the general public and $12 with Hope College I.D., and are available at the ticket office in the main lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at (616) 395-7890.  Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

The DeVos Fieldhouse is located at 222 Fairbanks Avenue, between Ninth and 11th streets. Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located at 277 College Ave., on College Avenue at 12th Street.

The doors will open at 8:30 p.m. the night of the concert.
