Hope Track & Field Performances at Nationals11

Four Hope athletes competed at the NCAA Division III track and field championships in Berea, Ohio.

* Junior John Donkersloot (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS) finished third in the high jump for the second consecutive year, clearing 6-10 1/4. He was competing in the high jump for the third straight year. As a sophomore he also cleared 6-10 1/4 and as a freshman just missed All-America status with a ninth place finish (6-6).

* Junior Kara Vande Guchte (Hamilton/Hamilton HS) finished third in the seven-event heptathlon. She entered the competition seeded 16th among 18 competitors. She placed 20th in 2009.

First-Day Results (3rd place after four events, 2,904 pts.)
100-Meter Hurdles - 2nd place, :14.88 (858 pts.)
High Jump - 4th place, 5-3 1/4 (747 pts.)
Shotput - 8th place, 32-11 1/4 (532 pts.)
200 Meters - 6th place, :26.35 (767 pts.)

Second-Day Events (Finished in 3rd with 4,724 points)
Long Jump - 7th place, 16-7 1/4 (576 pts.)
Javelin - 9th place, 116-1 (579 pts.)
800 Meters - 11th place, 2:32.24 (665 pts.)

* Senior Jeff Minkus (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West HS) became Hope's first NCAA All-American in the triple jump with a fourth place finish. Seeded 10th among 18 competitors, he bettered his school record by nine inches with a jump of 48-11. He was competing at nationals for the first time.

* Freshman Sarah Venlet (Zeeland/Holland Christian HS) did not advance to the finals in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing 14th (1:03.65) among 18 competitors in the prelims. She had been seeded 17th. Venlet earlier this spring set a Hope record with a time of 1:03.04.
