Hope College Concert Band to Perform on April 7

The Hope College Concert Band will perform on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

The concert band consists of Hope students and community members from the Holland and Zeeland area.  The group meets Thursday evenings.

The concert will feature a variety of band classics.  Highlights will include the "Enigma Variations," by Elgar; "Pageant," by Persichetti; "Elegy for a Young American," by Lo Presti; "Fortress," by Ticheli; "Toccata," by Frescobaldi; and a variety of national anthems narrated by one of the band's community members, Lou Van Koevering of Zeeland, who plays trumpet in the ensemble.

The performance will showcase three student conductors, including junior Michael Naughton of Prospect Heights, Ill.; junior Robin Pulsifer of Charlotte; and sophomore Jessica Wells of Indian Creek, Ill.

The band is directed by Gabe Southard of the HopeCollege music faculty.  An assistant professor of music and member of the faculty since 2007, Southard completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in conducting at MichiganStateUniversity. Prior to his residence at MSU, he served as wind symphony conductor and flute studio teacher at the University of Michigan-Flint, where he also taught orchestration, music appreciation and advanced conducting.  While living in Cincinnati, Ohio, Southard served as conductor of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble from 1999 to 2002.
