Flying Dutch Top DII in Women's Basketball Attendance

Exciting Hope College home sports action was again a crowd pleaser in 2010-11. 

The NCAA has announced that in Hope led all Division III women's basketball programs in average home attendance during the 2010-11 season.

Hope also topped Division III during 2010-11 in attendance at its home volleyball (802 average) and men's basketball (2,8218 average) contests. No Division III member has ever accomplished this fete. Hope was also second nationally in men's soccer home attendance (983 average).

It marks the third straight year that Hope has been the leader in women's basketball attendance. This past season the team averaged 1,546 fans over 17 home dates. The average home game attendance among all 426 Division III basketball programs in 10-11 was 231 fans.

It is the fourth time since moving to DeVos Fieldhouse that Hope has been the DIII leader in women's basketball attendance. In 2005-06, the first year at DeVos, the team averaged 1,329 fans per game. In 2008-09 the team averaged 1,269 and in 2009-10 it was 1,138. 

The Flying Dutch, who posted an overall 27-3 record, were 16-1 on their home court. The February 5th game against rival Calvin attracted the largest crowd, 3,433..

Hope five-season record at DeVos Fieldhouse in 96-2. A 77-game home floor winning streak came to an end on March 5th in an NCAA tournament game against Washington, Mo., 56-52. In 15 seasons under coach Morehouse, the Flying Dutch are 209-21 (.909) on their home floor.

The conference Hopes belongs to, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), finished second among NCAA Division III conferences in attendance. A total of 50,493 fans, or an average of 463 per contest, attended games hosted by MIAA schools during the season, ranking behind only the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which led Division III in attendance at 507 fans per contest.

The 2011-12 season will begin on November 15 against Rochester. It will be the first of 12 regular season home games. A season highlight will be hosting the NCAA Division III Final Four on March 16-17.
