Education

• B.S. 1976 Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine
• M.S. 1979 Biology, California State University, Northridge
• Organization for Tropical Studies, Costa Rica 1981
• Ph.D. 1986 Zoology, University of Florida

Teaching Interests

Currently I teach Animal Behavior, Vertebrate Zoology, Ecology, Organismal Biology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, and environmental science courses. I enjoy being involved in science education at the pre-college level as well, and especially like to work with teachers who are interested in learning to use outdoor resources to teach inquiry-based science.

Research and Scholarship Interests

My research includes the behavioral ecology of vertebrates (primarily birds) and community and evolutionary ecology of plant-animal mutualisms. Undergraduate students working with me have recently completed investigations on factors limiting reproductive success of Eastern Bluebirds and their nest-site competitors, seed rain and forest regeneration in tropical woodlots and their pastures, the ecology of the invasive plant Autumn Olive, the interactions between physiological and behavioral aspects of fruit choice in thrushes, as well as the effect of fruit laxatives on seed passage rates in birds. My scholarly pursuits also include science workshops for teachers, writing articles for children's science magazines and assisting with the efforts of the Ecological Society of America to improve undergraduate and pre-college ecology education.

Personal Interests

I love combining work (biology) and family fun (camping, fishing, cross country skiing, photography, exploring new places (especially in Costa Rica and in southwestern deserts of the U.S.) and doing roadside biology and geology from the interstates). My family includes Dr. K. Greg Murray (also a colleague at Hope), sons Dylan and Ryan, and 2 Aussies, Bear and Rocky. I enjoy participating as a parent and as a resource scientist for local schools.
