Carla Vissers graduated from Hope College in 1988 with a BA in English and Philosophy.  She represented the sixth ward on the Holland City Council from 1989 to 1992, at which point she moved with her family to the Charlotte, North Carolina area, where she worked for an interfaith non-profit agency called Mecklenburg Ministries.  She began her graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1994, and continued at Western Michigan University in 1995, after moving back to Holland.  In May of 1998 she earned her MFA, and later that year, in August, she began teaching part-time in the English department at Hope.

Carla’s short stories and essays have appeared in various magazines including Cricket, Mid-American Review, Lullwater Review, Black Dirt, and others.  In 1999 she won the Florida Review Editor’s Prize for her story “The Muscle Suit” and the GSU Review Prize for Fiction for her story “Jesus and the Land Mammals.”  She is currently at work on a novel.
