This is an introduction to the
natural processes shaping Earth’s surface. Among other topics,
weathering, landform
and soil development, soil mechanics, the influence of running water,
moving ice and
wind on Earth’s surface, and people’s interaction with
surficial geology will be
stressed. The use of maps and other geographic images will be emphasized
in the
laboratory and the course will include an introduction to mapping.
Three lectures and
one three-hour laboratory each week. Two Saturday field trips will
be required. No
prerequisites.
