Bunn then added four more free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the victory and Hope's third consecutive MIAA tournament championship. Will Bowser added 14 points.

The Flying Dutchmen advanced to the tournament's championship game for the 11th time in 19 years with a strong second half effort. The teams were tied 32-32 at halftime. Hope shot 62% from the floor over the final 20 minutes to offset Olivet's dominant rebounding advantage.

    Box Score
The Flying Dutchmen maintained their perfect start in first round games of the conference tournament, but not without a struggle on Wednesday night. Coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen emerged with a 66-61 victory over Trine in a game very similar to one last Saturday when Hope edged the same Trine team 58-53. The Flying Dutchmen are now 14-0 in conference tournament first round games. Hope (19-7) advances to the semi-finals on Friday against Adrian (15-12) at Calvin College (6 p.m.).

The Flying Dutchmen had to display patience against Trine's slowdown offense. It paid dividends as Hope gained a 34-18 lead at halftime. The Thunder fought back to within six points with four minutes remaining and its wasn't until the final minute that the Flying Dutchmen were assured victory.

All of Hope's points came from the starting lineup led by Peter Bunn who finished with 20 points. Andy Venema was perfect on offense shooting 6-for-6 on field goals and 5-for-5 on free throws for 18 points. Sophomore David Krombeen was also in double figures with 14 points.

Flying Dutchmen Win Rivalry Game (11/28/09)
    Box Score
Hope and Calvin chalked-up another bizarre ending to their storied rivalry on Saturday night. Playing in the consolation game of the Hall of Fame Classic, coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen won the 173rd meeting of the teams 79-76, but not without a most unusual conclusion.

Calvin rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second half to tie the score at 70-all with 2:17 left. Hope's Chris Nelis answered with a three-point basket at 1:53. Free throws gave Hope a 77-70 lead with 20 seconds remaining, but the host Knights weren't done. Calvin battled back to within three points, 79-76, with 02.5 seconds remaining.

Hope's inbound pass was stolen and a desperation shot from the corner as the buzzer sounded parted the net. However, the basket was waved off by the officials because the Calvin bench had called for a timeout when the inbound pass was stolen negating the three-pointer. One second was put back on the clock. This time a Calvin three-point attempt was short giving Hope the win and a three-game advantage in the alltime series.

Junior Peter Bunn was named to the all-tournament team for the second consecutive year. Against Calvin he scored 19 points making 8-of-10 shots. Chris Nelis scored a career-best 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds while David Krombeen added 13 points.
