Blake Rottschafer Competes at Nationals (11/17/12)
Results
Competing as an individual, senior Blake Rottschafer (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) finished 194th in a field of 276 runners with an 8K time of 26:21.5. The meet winner was Tim Nelson of UW-Stout in 24:26.8.

Mark Northuis Honored as Regional Coach of Year Cross country coach Mark Northuis has been honored by his peers as the Great Lakes Region women's cross country coach of the year. The award is given by the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Northuis coached the Flying Dutch to the championship of the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional. continue

Flying Dutchmen 12th in 37-team NCAA Regional Field (11/10/12)
The Flying Dutchmen finished 12th in a 37-team Great Lakes Regional field in Anderson, Ind. on Saturday. Calvin repeated as champion with 76 points. Hope totaled 306 points led by senior Blake Rottschafer of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS), pictured right, who was 15th among the 256 runners over the 8K course (25:34). Rottschafer will be among seven runners competing at-large at the Division III nationals next Saturday, Nov. 17 in Terre Haute, Ind. Other Hope runners were freshman Joseph Beemer, 80th (26:45); junior Sam Pederson, 85th (26.49); sophomore Zack Zandbergen, 93rd (26.54); freshman Kyle Anderson, 103rd (27:01); junior Tom Smeltzer, 13th (27:33); and junior James Rogers, 151st (27:44). Qualifiers to Division III nationals.

All-MIAA Honors Awarded Eight Hope Athletes (10/29/12)
All-MIAA honors have been presented to eight Hope athletes. Recognition is determined by athletes' finishes in the conference jamboree and season-ending championship meet. Achieving first team honors are junior Camille Borst of Allendale (Allendale HS), senior Sharon Hecker of Grandville (Grandville HS), junior Sam Pederson of Mt. Prospect (Mt. Prospect HS), and senior Blake Rottschafer of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS). Hecker is being honored for a second time. Hope Teams Compete at Oshkosh Invitational (10/13/12)

Competing in a very competitive field in Oshkosh, Wisc., the Flying Dutch finished fourth in the women's 5K while the Flying Dutchmen were 15th in the men's 8K. Junior Sheri McCormack led the Dutch with a 16th place finish while senior Blake Rottschafer was the top Hope men's finisher in 18th. On Friday part of the teams competed in the Muskegon Community College Invitational. The Flying Dutchmen placed fourth in an eight-team field while the Flying Dutch were fifth among the eight women's squads. Kyle Gibson led the men over the 8K course in 19th place (25:54) while Allyson Schnell topped the women over their 5K at 31st (20:29).

Harriers Compete at Muskegon CC Invitational (10/12/12)
Hope's cross country teams are busy this weekend with split squads competing in two different invitationals. On Friday part of the teams competed in the Muskegon Community College Invitational and on Saturday others will run in the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. In Muskegon, the Flying Dutchmen placed fourth in an eight-team field while the Flying Dutch were fifth among the eight women's squads. Kyle Gibson led the men over the 8K course in 19th place (25:54) while Allyson Schnell topped the women over their 5K at 31st (20:29).

Hope's cross country program had a busy weekend team members competing in invitationals in Lansing, Mich. and Louisville, Ky. At the 20-team Lansing Invitational, the Flying Dutch finished second in the women's 5K while the Flying Dutchmen were ninth in the men's 8K. In Louisville, the Flying Dutch were 12th in the 43-team Blue division while the Flying Dutchmen, competing in two divisions, were 2nd in the Silver among 38 teams and 27th among 46 teams in the Blue.

Lansing Summary: Leading the Flying Dutch was Cory Cook in 11th place (19:23) among the 153 runners. Other Hope runners figuring into Hope's 74-point score were Taylor Mattarella, 14th (19:29.5); Priscilla Van Heest, 16th (19:31.6); Emily Wrozek, 20th (19:40.3) and Michelle Kerr, 23rd (19:47.1). Leading the Flying Dutchmen was Kyle Anderson in 47th place (27:32.6) among the 167 runners. Other Hope runners figuring into Hope's 209 point total were Tim Lewis, 42nd (27:23.78); Tom Smeltzer, 47th (27:25.8); Rollin Cook, 47th (27:27.9); and Daniel Schriemer, 71st (27:53.0). Leading the Flying Dutchmen in the blue division was Kyle Anderson in 47th place (27:32.6) among the 167 runners. Both Hope Teams Second at MIAA Jamboree (9/22/12)

Both Hope cross country teams finished second in their respective races at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary's on Friday. Rival Calvin won both races.

Flying Dutchmen Ninth at Knight Invitational (9/8/12)

The Flying Dutchmen finished ninth in the 19-team Calvin Knight Invitational. The host Knights ran away with the title at 30 points. Hope ended with 78. Senior Blake Rottschafer led the Hope runners in 29th place.

Hope Dominates Season-Opening Invitational (9/1/12)
Results
Both Hope cross country teams marked the start of the season by winning their own invitational on Saturday. Competing in the Bill Vanderbilt Invitational at the Ridge Point Community Church course, the Flying Dutch won the five-team women's 5K for the third consecutive year while the Flying Dutchmen took the 8K men's crown by edging two-time defending champion Albion by four points. Hope totaled 18 points in the women's standings, followed by Albion 61, Cornerstone 65 and Muskegon Community 106. Hope junior Sheri McCormack ran away from the field with a course record time of 18:17. In the men's race Albion took the first three places, but Hope took five of the next six to total 39 points. Albion ended with 43 points, followed by Cornerstone 67 and Muskegon Community 85. Albion junior Paul Lewis led the field with a time of 26:15. Leading Hope was Blake Rottschafer in fifth place (26:26).


Pre-Season Headlines

Pre-Season Coaches Polls Include Hope Harriers
Both Hope College cross country teams have received pre-season recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Each is ranked in the Great Lakes region poll, the women's team in fourth and the men's team fifth. The Flying Dutch are also ranked 22nd in the pre-season Division III national poll. Rival Calvin is the top-ranked team in both the men's and women's regional poll.

The Hope teams launch their season with the traditional home Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Ridge Point Community Church south of Holland. The Hope cross country program is directed by Mark Northuis who begins his 24th year as head coach. The Flying Dutch in 2011 were champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Flying Dutchmen were second behind Calvin. Both teams finished in the top ten at the Great Lakes Regional meet, the women at fourth and the men in sixth. The Flying Dutch also qualified for the NCAA Division III nationals.

2012 Pre-Season Outlook

The Flying Dutchmen look to build on a successful 2011 season during which they finished second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and sixth among 33 teams in the Great Lakes Region of NCAA Division III. Hope just missed consideration for an at-large bid to nationals, finishing only two points behind the fifth place team.

Hope has a long history of competitiveness in the MIAA and NCAA. Under veteran coach Mark Northuis the past 23 seasons, the team has finished third or higher every year in the conference standings and has been in the top ten in the Great Lakes Region eight of the last nine seasons.

The pre-season roster of 35 runners includes 20 returning letterwinners. There are 12 freshman prospects along with six sophomores, 10 juniors and seven seniors.

Co-captains are seniors Will Hewitt of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS), Blake Rottschafer of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS), and Chris Ryan of Vicksburg (Vicksburg HS).

Rottschafer and sophomore Ben Zank of Midland (H.H. Dow HS) were named to MIAA all-conference second team in 2011. Zank was chosen the team's best newcomer while Jesse Henkel of Mason (Mason HS) was honored as the most improved runner.

Four returnees scored points in the 2011 league championships and NCAA Regional -- Blake Rottschafer, Chris Ryan, Ben Zank and junior Tom Smeltzer of Frankfort (Benzie Central HS).

Hope Harrier Competes at NCAA Championships (11/19/11)
Results
Senior Nate Love of Midland (Midland HS) concluded his collegiate cross country career finishing 81st among 279 runners with a career-best 8K time of 25:09.5. It was nearly five second faster than his 2010 nationals time (25:13.2) when he placed 61st. Co-captain of the team, Love was a three-time All-MIAA runner. He was a second team honoree as a sophomore and on the first team as both a junior and senior.

Flying Dutchmen Sixth at NCAA Regional (11/12/11)
The Flying Dutchmen just missed qualifying as a team for the NCAA Division III nationals but for the second straight year senior Nate Love qualified as an individual. Competing at the Great Lakes Regionals, Love placed 13th among 243 runners. Hope as a team just missed consideration for an at-large bid to nationals, finishing only two points behind the fifth place team. Meet winner Calvin and runnerup Wabash received automatic bids to nationals. Rounding out Hope's top five finishers were junior Blake Rottschafer, 28th; freshman Ben Zank, 39th; senior Andrew McKeachie, 56th; and junior Chris Ryan, 93rd.

Flying Dutchmen Finish Second at MIAA Championships (10/29/11)
Results
Featuring outstanding team balance, the Flying Dutchmen finished second at the MIAA championships on Saturday. Calvin repeated as champions while the Flying Dutchmen of coach Mark Northuis finished three points ahead of Albion to take the seasonal runnerup spot. Hope's top five runners were within 47 seconds of each other. Senior Nate Love finished sixth in the field with an 8K time of 25:28 and his teammates were right behind -- junior Blake Rottschafer, 11th (25:40); freshman Ben Zank, 12th (25:44); senior Brian Hernandez, 19th (26:14); and sophomore Tom Smeltzer, 20th (26:15).

Three runners achieved All-MIAA honors. Senior Nate Love (Midland/Midland HS) achieved first team honors for a second year in-a-row while named to the second team were junior Blake Rottschafer (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) and freshman Ben Zank (Midland/Dow HS)
