Flying Dutch a Top Ten Team at Nationals (11/17/12)
Results
Competing as a team, the Flying Dutch posted their
best finish at the NCAA Division III championship in nearly two decades by placing
10th in a field of 32 teams. Johns Hopkins, Md. won the meet with 158 points
while the Great Lakes Regional champion Flying Dutch tallied 334. Rival Calvin
was 18th. The finish is Hope's best since 1993 when the Flying Dutch were fourth
at nationals. Junior Sheri McCormack (Holland/West Ottawa HS) led the Flying
Dutch in 37th place among the 263 runners with a 6K time of 22:03.4.
The meet winner was Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh in 20:55.2. Other Hope finishers
were senior Sharon Hecker (Grandville/Grandville HS), 77th (22:36.7); junior
Meredith Busman (Coopersville/Coopersville HS), 81st (22:37.6); junior
Camille Borst (Allendale/Allendale HS), 122nd (22:56.2); senior Taylor Mattarella

Mark Northuis Honored as Regional Coach of Year

The Flying Dutch are NCAA Great Lakes Regional champions for the first time in a quarter of a century. Coach Mark Northuis' Flying Dutch bested a 33-team field, including six-time defending regional champion Calvin, in competition Saturday in Anderson, Ind. The Flying Dutch will advance to the NCAA Division III national championship in Terre Haute, Ind. next Saturday. It will be Hope's third consecutive appearance at nationals and the 10th time in school history.
The Flying Dutch edged Oberlin, Ohio for the regional title, 91-95, while Calvin ended 12 points behind. Junior Sheri McCormack led the Dutch with a third place in the 234 runner field over the 6K course (21:46). Other Hope finishers were senior Sharon Hecker, 17th (22:13); junior Meredith Busman, 19th (22:16); junior Camille Borst, 24th (22:32); senior Taylor Mattarella, 31st (22:49); junior Katie Carlson, 43rd (23:07); and freshman Julia Stock, 73rd (23:55).

All-MIAA Honors Awarded Eight Hope Athletes (10/29/12)
All-MIAA honors have been presented to eight Hope athletes. Recognition is
determined by athletes' finishes in the conference jamboree and season-ending
championship meet. Achieving first team honors are junior Camille Borst of
Allendale (Allendale HS), senior Sharon Hecker of Grandville (Grandville
HS), junior Sam
Pederson of Mt. Prospect (Mt. Prospect HS),
and senior Blake Rottschafer of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS). Hecker is being

Both Hope cross country teams finished second behind rival Calvin at the MIAA cross country championships on Saturday. Achieving All-MIAA first team honors were junior Camille Borst (Allendale HS), senior Sharon Hecker (Grandville HS), junior Sam Pederson (Mt. Hope Teams Compete at Oshkosh Invitational (10/12/13)

Competing in a very competitive field in Oshkosh, Wisc., the Flying Dutch finished fourth in the women's 5K while the Flying Dutchmen were 15th in the men's 8K. Junior Sheri McCormack led the Dutch with a 16th place finish while senior Blake Rottschafer was the top Hope men's finisher in 18th. On Friday part of the teams competed in the Muskegon Community College Invitational. The Flying Dutchmen placed fourth in an eight-team field while the Flying Dutch were fifth among the eight women's squads. Kyle Gibson led the men over the 8K course in 19th place (25:54) while Allyson Schnell topped the women over their 5K at 31st (20:29).
Harriers Compete at Muskegon CC Invitational (10/12/12)
Hope's cross country teams are busy this weekend with split squads competing in two different invitationals. On Friday part of the teams competed in the Muskegon Community College Invitational and on Saturday others will run in the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. In Muskegon, the Flying Dutchmen placed fourth in an eight-team field while the Flying Dutch were fifth among the eight women's squads. Kyle Gibson led the men over the 8K course in 19th place (25:54) while Allyson Schnell topped the women over their 5K at 31st (20:29).

Hope's cross country program had a busy weekend team members competing in invitationals in Lansing, Mich. and Louisville, Ky. At the 20-team Lansing Invitational, the Flying Dutch finished second in the women's 5K while the Flying Dutchmen were ninth in the men's 8K. In Louisville, the Flying Dutch were 12th in the 43-team Blue division while the Flying Dutchmen, competing in two divisions, were 2nd in the Silver among 38 teams and 27th among 46 teams in the Blue.
Lansing Summary: Leading the Flying Dutch was Cory Cook in 11th place (19:23) among the 153 runners. Other Hope runners figuring into Hope's 74-point score were Taylor Mattarella, 14th (19:29.5); Priscilla Van Heest, 16th (19:31.6); Emily Wrozek, 20th (19:40.3) and Michelle Kerr, 23rd (19:47.1). Leading the Flying Dutchmen was Kyle Anderson in 47th place (27:32.6) among the 167 runners. Other Hope runners figuring into Hope's 259 point score were Noah Litwiller, 55th (27:50.8); Joe Frakes, 65th (27:56.5); Matt Rolain, 66th (27:58.0) and Kyle Mireless, 80th (28:25.2).

Flying Dutch Impressive in Triangular Meet (9/7/12)
Results
The Flying Dutch had an impressive showing against two Division I opponents on Friday. Competing in the George Dales Invitational, the Flying Dutch won the meet, edging Eastern Michigan University 30-31 points while host Western Michigan ended with 60 points. Sheri McCormack led the Flying Dutch in second place with a 6K time of 22:10 followed by teammate Sharon Hecker at 22:44. Camille Borst and Julia Stock were seventh and eighth with the same time (:23.03) while Meredith Busman rounded out the team score in 10th (23:20).
MIAA Recognizes Junior Sheri McCormack
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Hope's Sheri McCormack as its female Runner of the Week in
cross country. A junior from Holland (West Ottawa HS), McCormack set a course record as she took first place in the women’s 5-kilometer
race at Hope’s Bill Vanderbilt Invitational. Her time of 18:17 led the way as the Flying Dutch won the meet with a team score of 18
points. She is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time in her career.
Hope Dominates Season-Opening Invitational (9/1/12)
Results
Both Hope cross country teams marked the start of the season by winning their own invitational on Saturday. Competing in the Bill Vanderbilt Invitational at the Ridge Point Community Church course, the Flying Dutch won the five-team women's 5K for the third consecutive year while the Flying Dutchmen took the 8K men's crown by edging two-time defending champion Albion by four points.
Hope totaled 18 points in the women's standings, followed by Albion 61, Cornerstone 65 and Muskegon Community 106. Hope junior Sheri McCormack ran away from the field with a course record time of 18:17. In the men's race Albion took the first three places, but Hope took five of the next six to total 39 points. Albion ended with 43 points, followed by Cornerstone 67 and Muskegon Community 85. Albion junior Paul Lewis led the field with a time of 26:15. Leading Hope was Blake Rottschafer in fifth place (26:26).
Pre-Season Coaches Polls Include Hope Harriers (8/24/12)
Both Hope College cross country teams have received pre-season recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Each is ranked in the Great Lakes region poll, the women's team in fourth and the men's team fifth. The Flying Dutch are also ranked 22nd in the pre-season Division III national poll. Rival Calvin is the top-ranked team in both the men's and women's regional poll.
The Hope teams launch their season with the traditional home Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Ridge Point Community Church south of Holland.
The Hope cross country program is directed by Mark Northuis who begins his 24th year as head coach. The Flying Dutch in 2011 were champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Flying Dutchmen were second behind Calvin. Both teams finished in the top ten at the Great Lakes Regional meet, the women at fourth and the men in sixth. The Flying Dutch also qualified for the NCAA Division III nationals.

2012 Pre-Season Outlook
The Flying Dutch will be seeking to repeat as champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and bidding for a third consecutive trip to the NCAA championships.
The 2011 Flying Dutch captured their first MIAA title since 2004, were fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and finished 21st in a field of 32 teams at nationals. A characteristic of the team was the ability for the top five runners to finish in a pack. At the league championships just 18 seconds separated Hope's five runners and the difference at nationals was 19 seconds.
Coach Mark Northuis begins his 24th season at the helm of the Hope cross country program. Under his leadership the Flying Dutch have finished third or higher every season in the MIAA standings and has been a top ten finisher at Regionals eight times over the past decade.
The pre-season roster of 35 runners includes 14 returning letterwinners. There
are 13 freshman prospects along with 8 sophomores, 12 juniors and four seniors.
The senior co-captains are both from Traverse City, Taylor Mattarella a graduate of Traverse City Central HS and Morgan McCardel from St. Francis HS.
The Flying Dutch return four runners who achieved All-MIAA recognition in 2011. Junior Sheri McCormack of Holland (West Ottawa) was a first team honoree while second team returnees include junior Camilie Borst of Allendale (Allendale HS), McCardel, and junior Meredith Busman of Coopersville (Coopersville HS).
McCormack was named both the most improved and most valuable runner a year agp. She was also an All-MIAA track honoree last spring.
Senior Sharon Hecker of Grandville (Grandville) returns after studying off-campus last fall. She was an All-MIAA cross country honoree in 2010 and honored by the conference last spring.

The Flying Dutch finished 21st in a field of 32 teams at the NCAA Division III championships in Oshkosh, Wisc. Hope's top five finishers ended just 19 seconds apart. Sophomore Sheri McCormack led the Flying Dutch over the 6K course with a 79th place finish (22:24.63) among 277 runners. Other Hope finishers were Kelly Lufkin, 96th (22:32.66); Meredith Busman, 98th (22:32.96); Camille Borst, 108th (22:37.66); Kate Nelson, 125th (22:43.80); Salome Emmanuel, 146th (23:03.76); and Taylor Mattarella, 201st (23:53.78).

For the second straight year, the Flying Dutch are headed to the NCAA Division III cross country championships. They have qualified after competing at the Great Lakes Regionals in Oberlin, Ohio. Sophomore Sheri McCormack led the Flying Dutch with a fourth place finish among 251 runners at the regional. The Flying Dutch finished third as a team behind rival Calvin and Ohio Northern. The Flying Dutch will be competing at nationals for the fifth time in school history. Rounding out Hope's top five finishers at Regionals were sophomore Meredith Busman, 17th; sophomore Camille Borst, 26th; senior Kate Nelson, 27th; and senior Kelly Lufkin, 29th.

Flying Dutch Run to MIAA Championship
Results
With five runners finishing within 18 seconds of one another, the Flying Dutch have captured the championship of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Coach Mark Northuis' Dutch edged defending champion Calvin by three points to claim their first league crown since 2004 and the sixth in school history. Sophomore Sheri McCormack was the first Hope finisher placing fourth (22:17) in the 6K race and her teammates were right with her -- sophomore Camille Borst, 7th (22:20); junior Morgan McCardel, 9th (22:29), senior Kate Nelson, 11th (22:33); and senior Salome Emmanuel, 12th (22:35).
Seven Hope runners received All-MIAA Honors. Sophomore Sheri McCormack (Holland/West Ottawa HS) and senior Kate Nelson (Williamston/Williamston HS) received first team honors while second team honorees were sophomore Camilie Borst (Allendale/Allendale HS), junior Morgan McCardel (Traverse City/St. Francis HS), sophomore Meredith Busman (Coopersville/Coopersville HS), senior Salome Emmanuel (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North HS) and senior Kelly Lufkin (Houghton/Houghton HS).
