Math Colloquium - "Advances in genetic databases and technology: implications on study design and analysis" by Nathan Tintle, Math Dept., VDW104 In 2003 the Human Genome Project was completed, identifying over 20,000 genes in human DNA and determining the sequence of 3 billion chemical base pairs making up human DNA. The completion of the Human Genome Project was the first in a continuing series of substantial milestones in the understanding of human genetics including the International HapMap Project, the compilation of the Gene Ontology and KEGG Pathway resources and the ongoing 1000 genomes project. In large part, these projects have been driven by the rapid development of different genetic measurement technologies over the last 5-10 years. These technologies include microarrays to measure gene expression, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and copy number variation as well as next-generation sequencing technologies. With this flurry of technological innovation, there are countless questions about the proper design and analysis of genetic studies using these new technologies. Ultimately,! |
