Math Colloquium - "Tales from the Crypt: The Mathematics of Secret Messages" by Darin Stephenson, Math Dept., VanderWerf 104 Additional information: ABSTRACT: Due to the growing usage of internet commerce, ATM and credit card transactions, and electronic correspondence, the need for secure communications has never been more evident. However, the desire to transmit sensitive information from place to place privately dates back many centuries. This need for security has resulted in the development of cryptology, a field that relies heavily on abstract algebra and number theory. In this talk, we will discuss the basic goals involved in cryptology, as well as the mathematics involved in creating simple cryptosystems. Our primary examples will include affine cryptosystems and simple examples of public key cryptosystems. We will give historical information relating to the development of cryptology and indications as to what new directions the field has taken since the development of public key cryptography nearly 30 years ago. |

The completion of the Human Genome Project was the first in a continuing series of substantial milestones in the understanding of human genetics including the International HapMap Project, the compilation of the Gene Ontology and KEGG Pathway resources and the ongoing 1000 genomes project. In large part, these projects have been driven by the rapid development of different genetic measurement technologies over the last 5-10 years. These technologies include microarrays to measure gene expression, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and copy number variation as well as next-generation sequencing technologies. With this flurry of technological innovation, there are countless questions about the proper design and analysis of genetic studies using these new technologies. Ultimately,! |

Computer Science Colloquium - "Getting Real with a Computer: How do we approximate an infinite number system with a finite machine" by Dr. Herb Dershem, Computer Science Dept, VDW 104 The real number system is a fantastic tool for solving many problems. There is just one difficulty in using this tool with computers: real numbers are infinite and computers are finite. There are a number of approaches to approximating real numbers on computers, each with its advantages and disadvantages. In this talk we will examine those approaches that were tried in the past, the present day standard (floating point), and some approaches that might be of interest in the future. |

Native American Heritage Celebration "Does Jesus Have Blue Eyes?", Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium Many of the injustices suffered by Native Americans have been carried out under the name of Christianity, which has created a gap between the two. Today Michael Peters works to bridge the worlds of Christianity and the Anishnaabe tradition in order to “bring the fire of the Holy Spirit into the Native culture.” As Executive Director of Sabaoth Ministries, located in Grand Rapids, Peters organizes sacred "gatherings" as a way for urban Natives to "reclaim and experience the beauty of our heritage for the glory of the Creator." |
