Great Performance Series to Feature Trio Solisti Tonight

The Hope College Great Performance Series will feature Trio Solisti on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

Comprised violinist Maria Bachmann, cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach and pianist Jon Klibonoff, the trio has been hailed as “The most exciting piano trio in America” by “The New Yorker” magazine. Terry Teachout of “The Wall St. Journal” has said, “To my mind, Trio Solisti has now succeeded the Beaux Arts Trio as the outstanding chamber-music ensemble of its kind.”

The trio’s Hope concert will include “14 Variations, Opus 44,” by Ludwig van Beethoven; “Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 3,” by Ernest Chausson; and Trio Solisti’s own arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” “Gramophone Magazine” said that the trio’s recording of Mussorgsky’s work “skillfully recasts Mussorgsky’s musical gallery.”

The trio’s performances across the country include great masterworks of Beethoven, Chausson, Dvorak, Ravel and Mussorgsky as well as several premieres.  The ensemble has made critically acclaimed debuts at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; in New York City on Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series, as guests of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and at Town Hall’s Peoples’ Symphony Concerts; at the Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Va.; at Seattle’s Meany Hall; and at La Jolla's Revelle series; and has performed in Canada and Italy.

With a rapidly growing discography, including a 2013 release of Dvorak Trios on Bridge Records, Trio Solisti has garnered high praise for its recordings.  The Musical America review has praised the trio’s “...sumptuous soaring lines, sultry countermelodies, and articulated dance rhythms with muscular clarity.”
