2013 Season in Review
Hope Players Honored for Inaugural Season (5/7/13)
The inaugural Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) all-conference
lacrosse teams include seven players from Hope College. Introduced at
Hope as a varsity sport this spring, both teams qualified for the
first-ever conference tournament. The Flying Dutch were third in the regular
season
women's standings
while the Flying Dutchmn finished fourth in the men's race.

Inaugural Season Ends in Semis of League Tournament (5/2/13)
The inaugural season of the Hope College lacrosse teams came to an end Thursday in semi-final games of the MIAA conference tournament.
Playing on the road, the Flying Dutchmen were defeated by regular season men's champion Adrian 24-12 while the Flying Dutch bowed at Alma 20-12. Adrian will host both tournament championship games on Saturday, first against Albion for the men's crown and then Alma for the women's title. The winners will gain a berth in the NCAA Division III championship.
Men's Summary: The host Bulldogs led 13-4 at halftime and ended with a 59-28 advantage in shots. Caleb Digison scored five goals for Hope while Nicklas Raycraft added four. Goalkeeper Ben Weber was credited with 15 saves. Hope ends with an 8-5 season record. Box Score

Flying Dutchmen Bow But Advance to Tournament (4/27/13)

The Flying Dutchmen will be seeded fourth in the conference tournament after bowing to host Trine 23-8 on Saturday. Coach Mike Schanhals' Dutchmen posted a 3-3 record in MIAA play and will travel to Adrian in the semi-finals of the conference tournament on Thursday. Hope is 8-4 overall.
Sweep of Rival Calvin Clinches Tournament Berths (4/24/13)
Both Hope lacrosse teams clinched a berth in their respective MIAA tournament by defeating rival Calvin on Wednesday. The four-team conference tournament next week will determine who represents the MIAA in its inaugural lacrosse season at the NCAA championships. Both Hope teams are in third place with one league game remaining.
Women: Hope 10, Calvin 4: Tied 2-2 at halftime, the Flying Dutch outscored the Knights 8-2 the rest of the way to improve to 3-2 in conference games and 5-8 overall. Coach Tracy Benjamin's Flying Dutch featured a balanced scoring attack led by Katie Sabourin's four goals. Maddie Ferguson added three goals followed by Molly Greenfield with two and Laurie Stubenrauch one. Credited with assists were Ally DeMaagd, Greenfield and Emily Oliver. Each team had 25 shots. Goalkeeper Raquel Harrouk was credited with nine saves.
Men: Hope 20, Calvin 5: Ten Hope players put the ball into the net as the Flying Dutchmen held a 53-19 advantage in shots. Hope led 13-1 at the halftime break. Jacob Kamstra scored six goals and was also credited with four assists. Caleb Digison added three goals followed by Austin Krehel 2, Nicklas Raycraft 2, Clint Lyders 3, Niko Pagkanlungan 1, Parker Osterink 1, Connor Smith 1, Peter Stuckey 1, and Andrew Johnson 1. Pagkanlungan assisted on three goals. Goalkeepers Ben Weber and Daniel Flavin combined for eight saves. Coach Michael Schanhals Dutchmen improved to 8-3 overall and are 3-2 in MIAA play.
Flying Dutchmen Suffer Conference Loss (4/20/13)

Visiting Albion gained a 14-4 victory over the Flying Dutchmen on Saturday. Coach Michael Schanhals' Dutchmen are 2-2 in conference games and stand 7-3 overall. The teams played a scoreless first period. Albion led 5-2 at halftime and owned a 10-2 advantage entering the final period. Jacob Kamstra scored a pair of goals. Albion had a 55-17 advantage in shots. Hope goalkeepers Ben Weber and Daniel Flavin combined for 14 saves.
Hope Senior Honored a Second Time by MIAA Coaches (4/15/13)
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Hope midfielder Michael Schofield its Defensive Player of the Week. A junior from Mendham, N.J. (Mendham HS), Schofield won 41 of 51 faceoffs (82 percent) and scooped up 33 ground balls as the Flying Dutchmen split a pair of MIAA games. He controlled 24 of 29 faceoffs and had 21 ground balls in a 15-10 loss to Adrian, then followed by winning 17 of 22 faceoffs and scooping up 12 ground balls in a 14-12 win over Olivet. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Flying Dutchmen Gain Close Victory (4/13/13)

The Flying Dutchmen won a wild conference match in edging Olivet 14-12 on Saturday night. The teams combined for 97 shots in a game played at Lowell High School. Hope led 14-8 early in the fourth period. With three minutes remaining, Olivet had trimmed the Hope lead to two goals. The teams went scoreless the rest of the way. Josh Kamstra led the Flying Dutchmen with six goals while Niko Pagkanlungan had four. Goalkeeper Ben Weber was credited with 10 saves. Coach Mike Schanhal's Dutchmen are 2-1 in the MIAA and 7-1 overall.
Flying Dutchmen Defeated in Home Debut (4/12/13)

Pre-season MIAA favorite Adrian spoiled Hope's home field debut on a cold, rainy night topping the Flying Dutchmen 15-10. Coach Mike Schanhal's Dutchmen slipped to 1-1 in the MIAA and are 6-2 overall.
The teams were tied 5-5 early in the second period. The Bulldogs reeled off six consecutive goals to gain an 11-5 advantage early in the third period. Hope made a run with three unanswered goals, but Adrian came back with the next four to seal the verdict.
Josh Kamstra led Hope's offense with four goals and an assist. Caleb Digison added two goals while scoring one each were Jacob Kamstra, Niko Pagkanlungan, Nicklas Raycraft and Sean Murphy. Jacob Kamstra also had three assists. Adrian edged Hope 38-36 in shots. Hope goalkeeper Ben Weber was credited with 11 saves.

MIAA Honors Hope Players for MIAA Opening Win (4/9/13)
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Hope attacker Niko Pagkanlungan and midfielder Matt Hemenway its men's lacrosse players of the week. Pagkanlungan, a junior from Naples, Fla. (Barron Collier HS), scored four goals and assisted on four others in leading the Flying Dutchmen to a 21-2 win over Alma in the first-ever MIAA men’s lacrosse contest for the two schools. He also picked up eight ground balls and caused three turnovers. Hemenway, a sophomore from Ionia (Ionia HS), helped lead the Hope defense in its MIAA-opening win over Alma as the Dutchmen limited the Scots to 15 shots and two goals. He scooped up six ground balls in the contest.
Both players are being honored as players of the week for the first time this season.
After playing seven games on the road, Flying Dutchmen (6-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA) make their collegiate home debut Wednesday entertaining pre-season conference favorite Adrian (6-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA). The game at Van Andel Stadium will begin at 7 p.m.

Hope's lacrosse teams marked their inaugural conference games with mixed results on Tuesday. The Flying Dutchmen gained a 21-2 road victory over the Alma Scots while the Flying Dutch suffered a 14-8 loss to the visiting Scots.
MEN: The Flying Dutchmen improved to 6-1 on the season behind a strong start Hope led 4-0 after the first period and expanded it to 15-1 at halftime. Josh Kamstra scored six goals while Jacob Kamstra tallied five and added four assists. Caleb Digison scored four goals and was credited with five assists while Niko Pagkanlungan had both four goals and four assists. Scoring single goals were Nicklas Raycraft and Austin Krehel. Hope held a 59-15 advantage in shots. Goalkeepers Ben Weber and Andrew Johnson combined for seven saves.
WOMEN: The visiting Scots got off to a fast start gaining a six-goal advantage at halftime. The teams matched goal-for-goal in the second half. Molly Greenfield scored three times and had an assist for the Flying Dutch while Laurie Stubenrauch put two in the net and assisted on another. Scoring single goals were Maddie Ferguson, Katie Sabourin and Ally DeMaagd. The Flying Dutch out-shot the Scots 31-27 and won 18-of-24 faceoffs. Goalkeepers Racquel Harrouk and Jessica Donnell split time and each allowed seven goals and was credited with five saves. Coach Tracy Benjamin's Dutch have a 1-7 season record.
Flying Dutchmen Suffer First Collegiate Defeat (3/23/13)
The Flying Dutchmen suffered their first defeat of the season and as a collegiate team on Saturday bowing to Carthage, Wisc. 20-12. Coach Mike Schanhal's Dutchmen have a 5-1 season record. The Red Men (4-1) led 8-3 after the first period, 13-5 at halftime and 17-5 going into the fourth quarter. Junior Jake Kamstra scored five goals and was credited with four assists while his senior brother Josh scored four times. Scoring single goals were Caleb Digison, Sean Murphy and Clint Lyders. Digison assisted on two goals while Parker Osterink had one. Goalkeeper Ben Weber was credited with seven saves.
Thursday, March 21 Game Cancelled (3/20/13)
The Hope at Milwaukee School of Engineering game scheduled for Thursday, March 21, has been cancelled because of an unplayable field. As of now, the game will not be rescheduled. The team's next game will be Saturday, March 23, at Carthage, Wisc.
Flying Dutchmen Extend Winning Streak to Five (3/18/13)

The undefeated Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to five behind a 22-4 victory over host Wilmington, Ohio on Monday. It was the second of four games on the team's inaugural spring break tour. Hope set the tone early leading 8-0 after the first period and by 13-1 at halftime. Brothers Josh and Jacob Kamstra provided the fire power for the Flying Dutchmen with Josh scoring eight goals while Jacob was credited with six assists while also scoring three times. Hope held a 54-21 advantage in shots and 58-25 edge in ground balls. Scoring two goals apiece were Peter Stuckey, Caleb Digison and Nicklas Raycraft. Goalkeepers Ben Weber and Andrew Johnson combined for eight saves.

In this their inaugural season the Flying Dutchmen are already 4-0 after defeating Bethany of West Virginia 18-5 on the road Friday. Coach Mike Schanhals' Dutchmen held a dominating 83-19 advantage in shots and 69-32 edge in ground balls. Senior captain Josh Kamstra continued his amazing offensive controbutions scoring six goals and assisting on two others. He has 20 goals through four games. Hope led 7-1 after the first period and owned a 13-1 advantage at halftime. Scoring two goals apiece were Sean Murphy, Michael Schofield, Peter Stuckey, Parker Osterink and Clint Lyders.
Flying Dutchmen Remain Unbeaten; Gain Win Over Rival Calvin (3/13/13)

The Flying Dutchmen remained unbeaten on the young season by posting an 18-5 victory over rival Calvin on Wednesday night. The game was a non-conference encounter. The teams will meet again in the inaugural MIAA season in April. Coach Mike Schanhals' Dutchmen improved to 3-0 overall.
The Flying Dutchmen jumped off to an 8-2 first quarter lead and were ahead 13-5 at halftime. Hope ended with a 48-20 advantage in shots. The scoring was spread across eight players led by Josh Kamstra with four goals. Scoring three goals apiece were Niko Pagkanlungan, Peter Stuckey and Nicklas Raycraft. Parker Osterink scored twice while adding one apiece were Sean Murphy, Clint Lyders and Michael Schofield. Hope used three goalkeepers with starter Ben Weber gaining the win behind one save. Daniel Flavin and Andrew Johnson shared the second half combining for seven saves.

The men's lacrosse team posted its second victory of the young season topping Hendrix, Ark. 13-6 Saturday in a game played on a neutral field in Rock Island, Ill. Junior Caleb Digison scored five goals and assisted on three others as the Flying Dutchmen held a 51-36 advantage in shots. Senior captain Josh Kamstra (Zeeland East HS) added four goals and an assist while junior Niko Pagkanlungan scored twice and assisted on three. Goalkeeper Ben Weber was credited with 14 saves.
Flying Dutchmen Score Historic First Collegiate Victory (3/2/13)

on a neutral field in Detroit. Senior captain Josh Kamstra scored six goals to key Hope's offense. Scoring two apiece were Peter Stuckey, Nicklas Raycraft and Parker Osterink while Niko Pagkanlungan and Clint Lyders each had one. Pagkanlungan was credited with three assists while Matt Hemenway had one. Hope held a 6-5 halftime lead. B-W gained a 7-6 midway through the third quarter. Hope scored five unanswered goals, two by Kamstra. Goalkeeper Daniel Flavin was credited was 11 saves.

A sport long on tradition at Hope College begins a new era when men's
lacrosse begins intercollegiate play this spring.
Men's lacrosse was a club sport at Hope for nearly 40 years. It gained
intercollegiate recognition when the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (MIAA) announced it would sponsor the sport beginning the
spring of 2013. The conference also gained an automatic berth in the
NCAA Division III championship.
The Flying Dutchmen are guided by veteran coach Michael Schanhals
wh directed the club program since 2004. A Hope alum, Schanhals
played in the Hope program as an undergrad.
The pre-season roster for the first collegiate season consists of 11
freshmen, seven sophomores, seven juniors and four seniors. The
captain is senior Josh Kamstra of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS).
In a pre-season poll of MIAA coaches, the Flying Dutchmen were picked
to finish fourth in the seven-team conference race. Adrian is the
pre-season favorite followed by Albion, Trine, Hope, Alma, Calvin and
Olivet. The first conference season will consist of a single round of
games followed by a four-team tournament to determine the MIAA's
qualifier to the Division III tournament.
In 2012 as a club sport, the Flying Dutchmen competed in the Central
Collegiate Lacrosse Association (CCLA) posting an overall record of
11-4. Players on this year's collegiate team who received 2012
all-conference honors are midfielder Josh Kamstra, junior midfielder
Niko Pagkanlungan of Naples, Fla. (Barron Collier HS), junior
midfielder Michael Schofield of Mendham (Mendham HS) and freshman
sophomore goalkeeper Ben Weber of Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS).
The Flying Dutchmen will play their games at the Van Andel Stadium.
The regular season schedule will consist of 15 games beginning
Saturday, March 2, against Baldwin-Wallace indoors in Pontiac, Mich. The
first home date will be a scrimmage on Thursday, March 28 against
Western Michigan University.
