Both Hope Teams Score at NCAA Championships (3/24/12)
Hope scored points in a third event at the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships on Saturday. Junior Josh Grabijas placed 12th in the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle (15:55.31). Grabijas was competing at nationals in the event for a third consecutive year. He was 17th as a sophomore and 18th as a freshman.

Both the women's and women's scored points at nationals, the Flying Dutch totaling 14 points for a 38th place finish and the Flying Dutchmen counted five for 45th place.

On Friday the women's 800-yard freestyle relay finished 12th to gain honorable mention All-America honors. The quartet of senior Sarah Sohn, junior Erin Holstad, senior Chelsea Wiese and junior Libby Westrate was timed in 7:39.73.

Hope swimmers competed in three other events on Saturday, but did not advance beyond the prelims. Senior Sarah Sohn was 17th (17:25.75) in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle while junior Libby Westrate placed 33rd among 43 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle (:52.52). The women's 400-yard freestyle relay finished 18th with the team of Sarah Sohn, Erin Holstad, Chelsea Wiese and Libby Westrate clocked in a season-best 3:32.89. Diver Kyleigh Sheldon was 21st on the three-meter board (329.35 pts.).

Hope to be Well Represented at Nationals (3/15/12)
Five Hope swimmers and a diver have qualified for the NCAA Division III championships to be held in Indianapolis from March 21-24. Coach John Patnott's contingent is eligible to compete in nine individual events and five relays.

Junior Josh Grabijas of Howell (Howell HS) has qualified as the 14th seed in the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle (15:51.00). He is also eligible to compete in the 500-yard freestyle (seeded 21st, 4:34.57) and the 200-yard freestyle (seeded 40th, 1:43.33).

The Flying Dutch are eligible to compete in four individual events. Junior Libby Westrate of Grandville (Grandville HS), is seeded 13th in the 50-yard freestyle (:23.70) and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle (:51.66). She is also eligible to compete in the 200-yard freestyle (seeded 24th, 1:52.58). Senior Sarah Sohn of Arlington Heights, Ill. (Prospect HS) is seeded 20th in the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle (17:28.00). For the first time in more than a decade, the Flying Dutch have qualified a diver for the NCAA championships. Junior Kyleigh Sheldon of Hastings (Hastings HS) is seeded 20th on both the one-meter and three-meter board.

The Flying Dutch are eligible to compete in all of the women's relays. The quartet of Libby Westrate, Sarah Sohn, junior Erin Holstad of Traverse City (Traverse City West HS) and senior Chelsea Wiese of Rochester (Rochester Adams HS) are seeded 11th in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:40.57); 25th in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.01); 26th in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.37), 26th in the 400-yard medley relay (3:55.83); and 29th in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.29).

Both Swimming/Diving Teams Honored for Academics (2/25/12)
Both Hope swimming/diving teams have been presented the 2011-12 Scholar All America Team from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The women's team compiled a 3.62 cumulative GPA, second highest among all NCAA Division III women's programs, while the Flying Dutchmen had a 3.42 cumulative GPA to rank 11th nationally among men's programs. continue

All-MIAA Swimming/Diving Honors are Announced (2/22/12)
Ten Hope athletes have been named to the all-conference teams of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Junior Libby Westrate of Grandville (Grandville HS) has been named the women's most valuable swimmer. She was a triple winner at the MIAA championships taking the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races. Seniors Sarah Sohn of Arlington Heights, Ill. (Prospect HS) and Jeff Shade of Davison (Davison HS) are each being honored for a fourth consecutive year. Hope's teams, coached by John Patnott, each finished second at the MIAA championships, combining to win the gold medal in 18 events. Each team had five All-MIAA honorees.

FINAL DAY HIGHLIGHTS

  • For the third night in-a-row, Hope swimmers began the competition at the MIAA swimming & diving championships by winning the opening event for both women and men. Senior Sarah Sohn won the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle for a fourth consecutive year with an NCAA conditional qualifying time (17:28.00). She becomes the ninth Flying Dutch swimmer in school history to win an event at the MIAA championships all four years. The men's 1,650 was won by junior Josh Grabijas, also with an NCAA conditional qualifying time (15:51).

  • Junior Nick Hazekamp made it a sweep in the backstroke as he won the 200-yard event (1:52.10). In the prelims he was timed in 1:50.67. His times were NCAA conditional qualifying performances.

  • Junior Libby Westrate captured her third freestyle event of the meet as she won the 100-yard free for a third consecutive year (:51.82) Her time of :51.66 was an NCAA conditional qualifying performance. She earlier won the gold in the 50-free and 200-free.

  • The Flying Dutch concluded the meet by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Libby Westrate, Erin Holstad, Sarah Sohn and Chelsea Wiese was timed in 3:33.01

    Gold Medal Performances Continue at MIAA Championships (2/17/12)

    Hope swimmers continue to collect the gold medals at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) swimming and diving champions. Hope swimmers captured first place in five events on Friday, including a sweep in the women's and men's 400 IM and 100 backstroke. Hope's gold medal count is now 13, three in relays and 10 in individual events.

    With one day remaining the championships at the Holland Aquatic Center, both Hope teams are in second place. The men trail Kalamazoo by 29.5 points while the women are behind rival Calvin by 110 points.

  • Hope started Friday as they did on Thursday by winning the first event in both the women's and men's finals. This time it was the 400-yard individual medley. Senior Chelsea Wiese won her second event of the meet in the women's 400 IM (4:40.08) while senior Jeff Shade successfully defended his men's title in the event (4:06.21). Wiese earlier won the 200 IM gold.

  • Junior Libby Westrate marked a three-peat as she won the 200-yard freestyle for the third consecutive year. She tied the school record in the prelims (:1:52.58) and her time in finals was 1:52.79, a conditional NCAA qualifying performance.

  • For the third time in the meet, Hope swimmers took first place in both the women's and men's event. This time it was the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Maria Kieft had a conditional NCAA qualifying time (:57.94) while junior Nick Hazekamp, who earlier in the prelims set a school record (:51.14), had a championship time of :51.20. His time was a NCAA conditional qualifying performance.

    Hope swimmers and divers had a banner night at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championships on Thursday capturing the gold medal in seven of the 12 events. After the second day of competition, the Hope women are in first place while the men are in second. The four-day championship at the Holland Aquatic Center continues on Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.

  • Hope swimmers opened Thursday's finals with outstanding performances by claiming the gold medal in both the women's and men's 500 freestyle. Senior Sarah Sohn (Arlington Heights, Ill.) won the women's 500 for a third consecutive year and junior Josh Grabijas (Howell) won the men's 500 for a third straight time in leading a 1-2-3 Hope finish. Finishing in second and third were seniors Jeff Shade (Davison) and Andrew Rose (Holland). Grabijas (4:34.57) and Shade (4:36.48) each had NCAA conditional qualifying times.

  • Senior Chelsea Wiese (Rochester) became Hope's first MIAA winner in the 200 IM (2:10.40) since 2004. She won the gold by five one-hundredths of a second.

  • Junior Libby Westrate (Grandville) continued to be the MIAA's premiere female sprinter as she repeated as champion in the 50-yard freestyle with an NCAA conditional qualifying time (:23.74).

  • Junior diver Kyleigh Sheldon (Hastings) took first place on the three-meter board to become the first Hope gold medal winner in the event since 2001.

  • Hope culminated Thursday's competition by winning both the women's and men's 400-yard medley relay. The women's quartet of sophomore Maria Kieft (Spring Lake), junior Sarah Krueger (Wixom), junior Erin Holstad (Traverse City) and junior Libby Westrate was timed in 3:55.83 while the men's relay of Nick Hazekamp(Janesville, Wisc.), Geoff Ludema (Ada), Matt Gregory (St. Joseph) and Patrick Frayer (East Grand Rapids) had an NCAA conditional qualifying time of 3:24.24.

    Gold Medal Performance Launches MIAA Championships (2/16/12)

    The MIAA swimming and diving championships got off to a rousing start at the Holland Community Aquatic Center, as the Hope women and Kalamazoo men captured the first events of the meet.

    In the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, the Hope team of Sarah Sohn, Erin Holstad, Chelsea Wiese and Libby Westrate took first place by more than 10 seconds with a school-record time of 7:39.58. The previous mark of 7:40.01 was established in 2009. The men's 800 freestyle relay went right down to the wire, as Kalamazoo edged Calvin by 0.54 seconds with third-place Hope finishing slightly more than a second back.

    Hope Teams Conclude Dual Meet Season With Wins (1/28/12)

    Hope's swimming and diving teams concluded the dual meet portion of their season by sweeping host Alma on Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen posted a 145-112 victory while the Flying Dutch were victorious 147-122. The Flying Dutch posted a 5-3 dual record while the Flying Dutchmen are 3-4.

    Men: Hope individual winners were Jeff Shade, 1,000 Free (10:06.17); Christopher Waechter, 100 Backstroke (:57.90) and 500 freestyle (5:09.40); Greggory Elhart, 100 Breaststroke (1:04.13); Matthew Gregory, 200 Butterfly (1:59.81); Jacob Hunt, 50 freestyle (:22.60); Nicholas Hazekamp, 200 backstroke (2:02.96); Alex Perkins, 200 Breaststroke (2:22.18).

    Women: Hope individual winners were Erin Holstad, 200 Freestyle (2:04.10) and 100 Butterfly (1:02.70); Chelsea Wiese, 100 Backstroke (1:05.69); Kyleigh Sheldon, one-meter diving (237.10) and three-meter diving (241.20); Maria Kieft, 200 Backstroke (2:16.61); Bethany Schmall, 500 Freestyle (5:28.70).

    Hope Teams Compete Against DII Grand Valley (1/20/12)
    Results
    Hope's swimming and diving teams competed against Grand Valley State on Friday night. The Flying Dutchmen were defeated 152-74 while the Flying Dutch bowed 149-90. The Hope women have a 4-3 dual meet record while the men are 2-4.
    Men: Hope winners were Nicholas Hazekamp, 100 backstroke (:53.42) and Josh Grabijas, 500 freestyle (4:43.31).
    Women: Hope winners were Sarah Sohn, 1,000 freestyle (10:46.34); Maria Kieft, 100 backstroke (1:03.18); and Kyleigh Sheldon, 3-meter diving (239.90 points).

    Flying Dutchmen Win Michigan-Illinois Quad (1/14/12)
    Results
    Hope's swimming teams competed in the Michigan-Illinois Quad hosted by Wheaton College on Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen won the men's meet edging MIAA rival Kalamazoo by a meer 1.5 points while the Flying Dutch ended third in the women's competition.

    Hope Splits Duals With Kalamazoo (1/6/12)
    Results
    Hope split dual meets with rival Kalamazoo on Friday night. The Flying Dutch (4-2) were victorious 126-115 while the Flying Dutchmen (2-3) were defeated 139-98.

    Women: Hope winners were Sarah Sohn, 1,000 free (11:14.69) and 500 free (5:20.60); Libby Westrate, 50 freestyle (:24.67) and 100 freestyle (:53.95); Chelsea Wiese, 200 IM (2:17.62); and Maria Kieft, 100 back (1:03.34). The outcome came down to the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The Flying Dutch quartet of Erin Holstad, Chelsea Wiese, Bethany Schmall and Libby Westrate won the event in 3:41.02.

    Men: Hope winners were Josh Grabijas, 1,000 free (11:14.69) and 500 free (4:50.78); Patrick Frayer, 50 free (:21.91); and Nicholas Hazekamp, 100 back (:53.88).

    Hope Teams Compete at Wheaton Invitational (12/3/11)
    Results
    Hope's swimming teams competed at the six-team Wheaton Invitational this weekend. In the men's meet, coach John Patnott's Flying Dutchmen finished third while the Flying Dutch ended fourth among the women's field.
    Women: Junior Libby Westrate was a triple winner capturing the 50 free (:24.13), 100 free (:52.29, NCAA conditional qualifying) and 200 free (1:55.22). Senior Sarah Sohn won the 200 butterfly (2:09.33).
    Men: The Flying Dutchmen had a strong finish in the 500 free taking third (Andrew Rose, 4:42.74), fourth (Josh Grabijas, 4:43.32) and fifth (Jeff Shade, 4:44.03). Shade and Grabijas also challenged in the marathon 1,650 free finishing third (16:19.77) and fourth (16:22.97) respectively. Hope had no event winners. Hope had three consolation heat winners -- Grabijas in the 200 free (1:44.50), Aaron Rittenhouse, 100 back (:55.13) and Brian Yount, 100 butterfly (:53.32).

    Rival Calvin Tops Hope in MIAA Duals (11/12/11)

    Visiting Calvin defeated Hope's swimming/diving with dual meet setbacks on Saturday. In the men's meet, Calvin prevailed 148-146 while in the women's meet the Knights prevailed 164-135. The Flying Dutch have a 3-2 dual meet record while the Flying Dutchmen are 2-2.

    Men: Hope event winners were Jeff Shade, 1,000 free (10:06.70) and 500 free (4:54.95); Nicholas Hazekamp, 100 back (:54.26) and 200 back (2:00.75); Geoffrey Ludema, 100 breast (1:01.42); Patrick Frayer, 50 free (:21.86) and 100 free (:47.86); Michael Huisingh, 200 breast (2:14.84); 400 free relay [Chris Waechter, Andrew Larson, Josh Grabijas, Patrick Frayer] (3:16.31).

    Flying Dutchmen Win Two-of-Three in Triple Dual (10/29/11)
    Results
    The Flying Dutchmen competed in a triple dual Friday and Saturday at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, defeating Albion 258-70 and Carthage 206.5-107.5, but losing to Olivet 203-111.

    Hope had two double winners -- Jeff Shade, 500 Free (4:54.55) and 1,000 Free (10:13.74) and Michael Huisingh, 100 Breaststroke (1:01.17) and 200 Breaststroke (2:15.13).

    Season is Launched with MIAA Relays (10/22/11)
    Results
    The swimming season started Saturday with Hope hosting all of the league's teams for the non-scoring MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center. All of the events were relays, most of them non-traditional. Hope winners included Women's 200 Backstroke Relay (Laura Cameron, Erin Holstad, Lairen Girard, Amanda Black) and Women's 500 Freestyle Relay (Taryn Gras, Libby Westrate Luisa Burgess, Sarah Sohn).
