Children's Performance Troupe to Open Two Plays

Posted June 7, 2001

Where can you find the land of Grosta Macs, Greesee Spudnicks, Bakee Lassees, and shlamstick? In the U.S. of course.

At least, that is how it all appears to young Nick, a boy trying to adjust to his new homeland and language. The New Kid, a play by Dennis Foon, is one of the two plays being performed by Hope Summer Repertory Theatre's popular Children's Performance Troupe. This lively, funny story will make children look at their own homeland in a whole new light.

CPT creates shows just for children, but the adults always insist on getting in as well. Professional theatre aimed at enchanting the young in age and heart, CPT's shows sell out on a regular basis.

James Saba returns as director of The New Kid, while Ross Williams directs CPT's musical, The Ugly Duckling. Based on Hans Christian Anderson's wonderful story, the tale has been adapted for the stage by Pam Sterling, with music and lyrics by Christopher Limber. Borrowing elements from the beautiful Kabuki theatre customs of Japan, combined with incredible masks and costumes, this musical adaptation will give the audience a fresh look at a classic story.

The New Kid shows at 10:30 a.m. on June 20, 22, 25, 27, July 16, 25, August 1, 6, and 10. Shows beginning at 1:30 p.m. are on July 30, August 3 and 8. The Ugly Duckling has 10:30 a.m. shows on July 6, 9, 11, 13, 18, 23, 30, August 3 and 8. Shows beginning at 1:30 p.m. are August 1, 6, and 10. Tickets are just $7. A special children's coupon gets children into both CPT shows and HSRT's mainstage show, The Wizard of Oz, for $17.

All CPT shows take place in the Studio Theatre located in the basement of DeWitt Cultural Center on the Hope College campus.

Tickets are available now. The ticket office is located in the DeWitt Center, on the Hope College campus at the corner of 12th Street and Columbia Avenue.

Tickets are also available for HSRT's regular season, which includes The Wizard of Oz, Rumors, Educating Rita, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Orphans, and He Loves, She Loves. Ticket office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and one hour before all show times. Tickets may also be purchased by calling (616) 395-7890.
