Posted August 1, 2000

HOLLAND -- The second edition of "The History and Theory of Rhetoric: An Introduction" by Dr. James Herrick of the Hope College communication faculty has been published by Allyn & Bacon of Needham Heights, Mass.

The book traces rhetoric's historical progression from the Greek Sophists of the fifth century B.C. to contemporary studies such as the rhetoric of science and feminist rhetoric. The text is intended for junior- and senior-level undergraduate students.

The new edition was released on Friday, July 7, with a 2001 copyright. The first edition of the 320-page book was published in 1997.

Herrick is a professor of communication and chair of the department at Hope. A member of the faculty since 1984, he specializes in courses in argumentation and rhetoric.

He is the author of three other books concerned with argumentation or rhetoric: "The Radical Rhetoric of the English Deists: The Discourse of Skepticism, 1680-1750" (1997), "Argumentation: Understanding and Shaping Arguments" (1995) and "Critical Thinking: The Analysis of Arguments" (1991). He has also had numerous articles appear in scholarly and popular publications in addition to presenting several papers at professional conventions.

Herrick earned his B.A. from California State University in 1976 and an M.A. from the University of California in 1978. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1986.
