Sports Medicine Lecture Series
To Focus on Knee Pain

Posted November 14, 2000

HOLLAND -- The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will examine knee pain on Monday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. in the Maas Center.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

The address, "'Hip' Strategies in the Treatment of Patellofemoral Pain," will be delivered by Karen Rakowski of the Midwest Sports Medicine Center in Springfield, Mo. According to Rakowski, while anterior knee pain is the most common orthopedic complaint in both the athletic and general populations, effective treatment has remained elusive. She will examine the way in which the ankle and hip joints relate to the knee's well-being, and explore the relationships' implications for treatment.

Rakowski is a certified athletic trainer and physical therapist at the Midwest Sports Medicine Center in Springfield. She serves as a clinical instructor in the athletic training program at Southwest Missouri State University, where she also teaches courses in surgical pathology and upper extremity assessment. She has presented the lecture topic at several national and regional sports medicine conferences.

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co- sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and the college.
