Concert at Hope Will Feature French Horn Music
Posted February 11, 2002
HOLLAND -- Hope College will present "An Afternoon
of French Horn Music" on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m. in
Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Thom Working, horn instructor at Hope, will
perform with accompanist Roberta Kraft. Also on the program
will be performances by Hope horn students; a student horn
group from Grand Valley State University; and members of the
West Michigan Horn Choir, a group of student, professional
and amateur players from throughout West Michigan.
Of particular interest will be a new piece by Eric
Ewazen for horn choir based on the Chippewa legend of the
sleeping bear.
The West Michigan Horn Choir, started 10 years ago
by Thom Working and some Hope College horn students and
alumni, provides opportunities for its members to perform a
variety of French horn music at concerts and church
services. The group has even performed at two West Michigan
Whitecaps baseball games.
Working has been the horn instructor at Hope
College for 17 years, and is a former first horn with the
Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo Symphonies. Besides performing
as soloist, Working will conduct the 35 members of the Horn
Choir in several ensemble pieces ranging from classical to
jazz.
Nykerk Hall of Music is located along the former
12th Street between College and Columbia avenues.
