Saxophonist to Perform with
Hope College Faculty Jazz
Ensemble
Posted October 15, 2001
HOLLAND -- Saxophonist Walt Weiskopf will join
members of the Hope College music faculty in a concert on
Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk
Hall of Music.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
"Jazz Times" magazine has called Weiskopf one of
jazz's top five most under-rated players. His music has
been described as a "dark and edgy sonic bulldozer."
A prolific writer, Weiskopf has produced nine CDs,
including his latest, "Siren." Bill Cunliffe of the "L.A.
Jazz Scene" has called Weiskopf "one of the greatest
composers of modern jazz." Weiskopf has also published
several books on jazz improvisation and the music of John
Coltrane, which have been used and recommended by artists
such as Michael Brecker.
After graduating from Queens College of the City
University of New York, Weiskopf performed with the American
Ballet Theatre Orchestra, the Concordia Chamber Orchestra
and the Gotham Chamber Orchestra, among others. He has
taught and coached saxophonists at the Manhattan School of
Music, the Eastman School of Music and the Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music. He currently teaches at New Jersey
City University.
Weiskopf will spend the day at Hope College
conducting clinics for Hope music students. The Hope
College Faculty Jazz Ensemble which will join him for the
evening concert is led by Brian Coyle.
Nykerk Hall of Music is located on the former 12th
Street between College and Columbia avenues.
