Sports Medicine Lecture Series to
Focus on Gender and Injury Treatment
Posted October 15, 2001
HOLLAND -- The Distinguished Lecture Series in
Sports Medicine of Hope College will examine "Gender
Difference in Coping with Injury" on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7
p.m. at Mary Free Bed Hospital, 235 Wealthy, S.E., in Grand
Rapids.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The address will be presented by Dr. Shaine Henert
of Chicago State University. He will focus on the different
ways in which male and female athletes commonly cope with
mild or moderate injuries during rehabilitation as well as
ways in which athletic trainers and therapists can help them
cope with their emotional responses to injury.
Henert, an assistant professor in the Department
of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Chicago
State University, has conducted research into injured
athletes' perceptions of the importance of social support as
a function of injury type and gender during rehabilitation.
He has served as a sport psychology consultant to
Minneapolis- and Chicago-area high school and university
athletic teams. He has presented his research at applied
sport psychology conferences in the U.S. and Canada.
The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports
Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an
interest in physically active patients, and is intended for
students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-
sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and
the college.
