Focus on Vegetarian Athletes
Posted October 26, 2001
HOLLAND -- The Distinguished Lecture Series in
Sports Medicine of Hope College will examine "The Vegetarian
Athlete" on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the college's
Maas Center, located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The address will be presented by Dr. Debra Vinci
of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. She will
review types of vegetarianism, which range from diets that
include meat to diets that include only certain fruits or
vegetables. Vinci will review the importance of planning to
insure a balanced vegetarian diet that is high in
carbohydrates, provides adequate protein to meet the
increased needs of athletes and is low in fat.
Vinci is an assistant professor in the Department
of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science at Appalachian State
University. She holds a doctorate in health education from
Loma Linda University, and had a number of experiences in
both health education and nutrition in the Pacific Northwest
before taking her present position in North Carolina. She
has published or made more than 40 presentations on subjects
related to athletic nutrition.
The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports
Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an
interest in physically active patients, and is intended for
students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-
sponsored by Holland Community Hospital, GRSportsCenter and
the college.
