Department of Mathematics Presents "A Week of Math" Oct. 15-20

HOLLAND -- The college's department of mathematics is presenting a variety of activities during "A Week of Math" on Monday-Saturday, Oct. 15-20.

Monday-Saturday, Oct. 15-20: Food Drive - Throughout the week we will be having a food drive for Community Action House. We will have boxes located in the department of mathematics and at each event throughout the week to collect can goods and other non-perishables.

Monday, Oct. 15: Study Break, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the "Reading Room" (room 222) of VanderWerf Hall. We will have cookies to snack on, games and puzzles to play, and books for sale at amazing prices. Plus, you can enter a raffle for a door prize to be given away at the end of the day.

Tuesday, Oct. 16: Careers in Mathematics Alumni Career Panel 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Maas Center conference room. This panel is organized by the Office of Career Services. Please join us for a pizza dinner as well as good conversation about the wide variety of opportunities for students who major in mathematics.

Wednesday, Oct. 17: Cookies and Tea 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the "Reading Room" (room 222) of VanderWerf Hall. Find out about courses being offered in the spring, competitions, graduate school, careers, internships, summer research opportunities, etc. Also, there will be a prize for the person who correctly matches the most faculty with pictures of their pets.

Thursday, Oct. 18: Problems and Puzzles Colloquium, 4 to 5 p.m. in room 104 of VanderWerf Hall. This interactive colloquium will be led by Professor John Van Iwaarden of the mathematics faculty.

Friday, Oct. 19: A Movie the Mathematics Way, 6:30 p.m. in room B50 of the Peale Science Center. We will watch "Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land" followed by "Apollo 13." This is your chance to fellowship with other math types, have some entertainment, and win a valuable door prize.

Saturday, Oct. 20: Lampen Competition morning, VanderWerf Hall. We will be hosting the 29th annual "Albert E. Lampen High School Mathematics Competition" for high school students. Research posters that were presented at the Undergraduate Research Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 11, will also be displayed to showcase Hope College to the high school participants.
