Students Named to College's Chapter of Mortar Board
Posted April 10, 2002
HOLLAND -- Forty Hope College juniors have been
elected into Mortar Board, a national honor society that
recognizes students for scholarship, leadership and service.
The formal initiation ceremony will be held on
Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. in the Maas Center auditorium.
New members will also be honored during the college's annual
Honors Convocation on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in
Dimnent Memorial Chapel. The public is invited.
The Hope College Alcor Chapter of Mortar Board
carries out many service projects and events on Hope's
campus and in the Holland community. In recent years, the
group's activities have included the "Wearing of the Blue"
breakfast for Dean's List students; mathematics and reading
tutoring; a Thanksgiving dinner for international students;
"Teach for America" pen pals; sponsoring a "Compassion
Child" from Ethiopia; and helping at the Holland Rescue
Mission and Center for Women in Transition. The chapter
also presents the "Hope Outstanding Professor Educator"
(H.O.P.E.) Award during the college's Honors Convocation
each year.
The college's chapter is part of a national
network that includes 208 chapters, 33 alumni chapters and
25 sections. Since the organization's founding in 1918,
more than 200,000 college seniors have been initiated into
the society.
The Hope chapter's advisors are Dr. Joseph
LaPorte, assistant professor of philosophy, and Dr. Dianne
Portfleet, adjunct assistant professor of English.
