Symphonette to Perform on Friday, Oct. 26

Posted October 23, 2001

HOLLAND -- The Hope College Symphonette will perform its second concert of the season on Friday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

Under the direction of Richard Piippo, the concert will feature the works of composers Mendelssohn, Elgar, Bizet and Vaughan Williams.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

The first work on the program is Felix Mendelssohn's "Symphony No. 2 in D Major." Written when he was 12, the symphony demonstrates Mendelssohn's genius, even at a young age.

Following the Mendelssohn is "Sospiri for Strings and Harp" by Edward Elgar. Composed as a memorial for a close friend, the piece resonates with Elgar's creative sensitivity.

The third piece on the program is the "Children's Suite," by Georges Bizet. The suite is written for a full chamber orchestra and features five whimsical movements dedicated to the joy of being a child.

The Symphonette will conclude the concert with the "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College Avenue at 12th Street.
