Barry Werkman Promoted to Vice President for Finance
Posted July 27, 2001
HOLLAND -- Barry Werkman has been promoted to vice
president for finance at Hope College.
Previously business manager and controller at the
college, Werkman has been a member of the Hope staff since
1967. The promotion recognizes the more senior role he has
assumed in finance since Bill Anderson, formerly vice
president for business and finance, became leader of Hope's
fund-raising division as senior vice president for finance
and development in February.
"With the expansion of Bill's responsibilities,
Barry is assuming considerably more involvement in the area
of finance at the college and he will be a resource person
to the Business Committee of the college's Board of
Trustees," said Hope College President James E. Bultman.
"Barry has served as a member of the Senior Staff since
1972. Barry is a very financially astute person with a vast
knowledge of the overall financial condition of the college,
and his wisdom and wise counsel are valued and trusted."
Werkman graduated from Hope in 1964 with a major
in business administration and minor in economics, and
completed a master of science degree in business
administration at the University of Wyoming in 1966.
He was an instructor at Ferris State University
during 1966-67, before returning to Hope to serve as an
instructor in the department of economics and business
administration for the next two years. He was appointed
assistant business manager in 1969, business manager in
1971, and business manager and controller in 1985.
Werkman is a past chair of the Holland Community
Hospital Board of Directors. His board memberships have
also included the Hawaii Distribution Corp., Lakeshore HMO,
Priority HMO, West Michigan Clinical Laboratory, Holland
Home Care, the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland
Area, Creative Dining Services Corp. and the Holland
Historical Trust. He is also a past president of the West
Ottawa Athletic Boosters and a past chair of the West Ottawa
School District Facilities Committee.
His wife Judith is a 1965 Hope graduate. Their
two children are also Hope alumni.
