Western Foundry Featured in Photo
Exhibition by Senior Anna Kohls

Posted November 6, 2002

HOLLAND -- The Western Foundry property on Fairbanks Avenue at 8th Street is featured in "found(ry) objects," an exhibition of photographs by Hope College senior Anna Kohls of Shawano, Wis.

The exhibition will run in the De Pree Art Center through Sunday, Nov. 17. The photographs are displayed in the elevator gallery on the way to the sculpture studio.

The foundry began as the Superior Foundry Company in 1916, and was purchased by Western Foundry Company of Chicago, Ill., in 1920. It closed in the fall of 2001.

The college purchased the vacated foundry property in June, and will build the DeVos Fieldhouse on the site. Hope plans to begin construction in the fall of 2003, with completion planned for late in the fall of 2004.

Kohls is an art and German major. Her activities have included Chapel Choir, College Chorus, the Women's Chorus, Fellowship of Christian Students and the Nykerk Cup competition. She is a member of the Delta Phi Alpha German honorary society, and has been named to the Dean's List.

She is the daughter of Joachim and Elli Kohls of Shawano. She is a 1998 graduate of Shawano Community High School.
