Hope College Orchestra to Present
First Concert of the Year on Oct. 25
Posted October 14, 2002
HOLLAND -- The Hope College Orchestra will present
its first concert of the year on Friday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m.
in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The orchestra will present works by Richard
Wagner, Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Wagner's "Prelude to Die Meistersinger von
Nurnberg" opens the evening's program. A majestic overture
filled with heralding trumpets, trombones and horns, lush
strings and lyrical winds, the piece is a fitting prelude to
the opening of the concert.
The orchestra then moves into Elgar's "Enigma,
Variations on an Original Theme." The English composer said
the work was "dedicated to my friends pictured within," as
it portrays musical pictures of his many friends.
The closing work will be the "English Folk Song
Suite" by Williams. Three pieces are inspired by the folk
songs "Seventeen Come Sunday," "My Bonny Boy" and "Folk
Songs from Somerset," creating a lighthearted work filled
with joy.
Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College
Avenue at 12th Street.
