Lecture Will Discuss William Shakespeare and George Herbert

HOLLAND -- Richard A. Strier of the University of
Chicago will present "The Praise of Passion" in two English
Renaissance authors not often discussed together, the
dramatist William Shakespeare and the poet George Herbert,
at Hope College on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 3:30 p.m. in the
DeWitt Center Herrick Room.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Strier is a highly respected scholar of
Renaissance literature and a recognized authority on George
Herbert. He is the Frank L. Sluzberger Professor of English
at the University of Chicago.
He is author of two books--"Love Known: Theology
and Experience in George Herbert's Poetry" (University of
Chicago Press, 1983), and "Resistant Structures:
Particularity, Radicalism, and Renaissance Texts"
(University of California Press, 1995). He is the co-editor
of four other books, the most recent of which are "Religion,
Literature, and Politics in Post-Reformation England 1540-
1688" (Cambridge University Press, 1996), co-edited with
Donna B. Hamilton, and "Writing and Political Engagement in
Seventeenth-Century England" (Cambridge University Press,
1999), co-edited with Derek Hirst.
The address is sponsored by the college's

floor of the DeWitt Center, which is located on Columbia
Avenue at 12th Street.
