Visiting Writers Series to Feature
Janet Burroway on Nov. 20

HOLLAND – National Book Award finalist Janet Burroway will be reading through the Hope College Visiting Writers Series on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Knickerbocker Theatre.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Burroway’s novel “Raw Silk” was runner-up for the prestigious National Book Award. A writer with a wide range of talent, Burroway has published seven novels, a volume of poetry, two children books and several plays.

Her latest book is an autobiographical collection of 16 essays titled “Embalming Mom: Essays in Life.”

Burroway’s “Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft” is a classic text book which has been in print for 20 years and is used at more than 300 colleges and universities in the United States.

Her other works include “The Buzzards” and “Opening Nights,” and the children’s books “The Giant Jam Sandwich” and “The Truck on the Track.” Currently a professor in the English Department of Florida State University, Burroway earned master’s degrees from Cambridge University, London and Yale School of Drama (New Haven, Connecticut).

She has been awarded a National Education Association grant, a Carolyn Benton Cockefaire Distinguished Writer-in-Residency award, a Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest fellowship, a Lawrence Foundation Award, a McKenzie Professorship, and the 1992 University Distinguished Teaching Award at Florida State University.

Music by the Hope College Jazz Ensemble will precede the reading beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Knickerbocker Theatre is located at 86 E. 8th St. in downtown Holland.
