Pacific Music/Dance Group to Perform
At Knickerbocker Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 13

Posted August 26, 2003 HOLLAND -- Hope College will feature Drum Drum, a contemporary Pacific music and dance group from Australia, on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre.

For the last three years, Drum Drum have been at the forefront of contemporary Pacific music and dance. Based in Darwin, the group draws upon the members’ diverse cultures and ancestry to create a style of music never heard before. Drum Drum’s performance is the fusion of invigorating Island chants with highly energetic log drumming and dance with a strong influence of Hip hop and Dub.

“Drum Drum’s contemporary music ranges from hypnotic and invigorating rhythms of the logs drums to a funky dance fusion, where ancient traditional instruments and chants are reborn with an influence of Funk, Ska, and Soul,” says “ABC Radio International.”

“Explosive energy” is how “Drum Media” has described the group. The band members come from Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Australia. Their concerts include traditional dance and songs, some of which had never been performed outside of Papua New Guinea. With more than 800 languages and 3,000 dialects, Papua New Guinea is one of the most diverse countries in the world.

“Drum Drum may be the biggest thing to emerge out of the Northern Territory…both funky and hauntingly beautiful at the same time” says “Low Down Magazine.”

The name Drum Drum is the English translation of Gaba Gaba, which is the name of a village in Papua New Guinea, the birth place of lead singer Tau Ingram.

Tickets for Drum Drum are $5 for adult admission, and free to children 18 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door, and the door will open at 6:15 p.m. The Knickerbocker Theatre is located in downtown Holland at 86 E. 8th St.

While on campus, Drum Drum will also be meeting with Hope College students for a masterclass and demonstrations.
