Hope College Sponsors Annual Arts and Humanities Fair

HOLLAND – Hope College will sponsor its annual Arts and Humanities Fair for high school students and faculty on Thursday, Oct. 9.

Hope College faculty and students from the departments of art, dance, English, history, modern and classical languages, music, philosophy, religion and theatre will present lectures and demonstrations that will introduce those attending to the variety of courses in the arts and humanities at Hope College.

Last year, approximately 360 students from 14 high schools were registered.

There will be workshops and lectures on a variety of topics. Among the presentations are “Hip-Hop with Ray,” “Brats, Snails, and Sushi: What food tells us about culture,” “Can Anyone Be Heroic?,” “J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Twentieth Century,” “The Art of Christian Giving: Painting in an African Church,” “Was Jesus a Feminist?,” “The Art of Costume Design,” a tour of the De Pree Art Center, “Ancient Cultures of Latin America,” “Hitler’s Artists and the Classical Imagination,” and “One Soldier’s Civil War: Ambrose Bierce.”

There will be a showcase concert featuring faculty and students of the department of music at 11 a.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel. The concert will be repeated for the general public on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m., also in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

The visiting high school students have also been invited to join the college’s students for lunch in the Phelps Hall dining room.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the fair will continue until 2 p.m. Additional information may be obtained by calling Victoria Kragt in the office of the dean for the arts and humanities, (616) 395-7748.
