Hope Wins Awards
For Student Activities

          HOLLAND -- Hope College won has won regional and
  national recognition from the National Association of Campus
  Activities (NACA) this year for student activities planning.
          The Social Activities Committee (SAC) was named an
  "Outstanding Programming Board" for 1997 in the NACA's Great
  Lakes Region during the region's fall conference, held in
  Toledo, Ohio, on Oct. 30-Nov. 2.  SAC also earned four
  graphic awards for student-designed publicity materials
  during the regional conference.
          In addition, Hope won two second-place awards for
  event publicity on Saturday, Feb. 14, during the national
  NACA meeting, held in Indianapolis, Ind.
          The NACA Great Lakes Region includes colleges and
  universities from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, western
  Pennsylvania and West Virginia.  SAC and the University of
  Akron's Residence Hall Program Board were named co-
  recipients of the "Outstanding Programming Board" honor,
  chosen by entertainers and agents with whom the
  participating NACA-member schools work.
          SAC programs social activities of an all-campus
  nature.  Examples include a film series, and special events
  such as visits by comedians, Siblings' Weekend, the All-
  College Sing and a year-end spring festival.
          Those from Hope with work recognized in the
  regional student-oriented graphics competition were:  junior
  Erin Overmeyer of Fort Wayne, Ind. (non-poster, first place;
  theme, second place; and multicolor poster, third place);
  and senior Greg Folkert of Holland and Anne Bakker-Gras,
  director of student activities at Hope (non-poster, second
  place).
          Overmeyer also received a national second place in
  the "Theme Publicity" category, and senior Rebecca
  Hollenbeck of DeWitt received a national second place in the
  "Professionally/Student-Designed Publicity" category for
  materials she created for Hope's Fall, 1997, New Student
  Orientation.
          In other action during the regional meeting,
  Folkert and senior Kevin Randall of Parchment were inducted
  into the 1997-98 Great Lakes Region Honor Roll.  The honor
  roll is designed to provide region-wide recognition for
  outstanding student leaders and staff members.  Folkert and
  Randall have each played a variety of leadership roles with
  SAC.  Randall also recently completed two years as the
  Michigan Student Representative to the region's steering
  committee.
          Randall was also recognized during the national
  convention as a recipient of a $300 leadership scholarship
  awarded by the national NACA organization.
