Theatre Stages Adaptation
of "Metamorphosis"

Posted December 1, 1998

HOLLAND -- Hope College Theatre will continue its
season with "Metamorphosis," based on the novel by Franz
Kafka, on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4-5, and Wednesday-
Saturday, Dec. 9-12, at 8 p.m. in the studio theatre of the
  DeWitt Center.
The theatrical adaptation, written by English
actor and director Steven Berkoff, features a highly
stylized approach to the darkly comical nightmare.  The
story follows Gregor Samsa as he wakes up one morning to
discover he has been transformed into a giant cockroach.
The production is directed by Jean Reed-Bahle,

of Grand Rapids, is known throughout West Michigan for her
acting and directing abilities.  For the past few years, she
has been heavily involved with Actor's Theatre in Grand
Rapids, as well as teaching classes at Hope College.  This
is Bahle's first time directing at Hope, though one of the
plays she has written, "Soli's Story," was first performed
as part of the department's 1996-1997 season.
The cast includes sophomore Christopher Pozzi-
Johnson of Geneva, Switzerland, as Gregor; junior David
Fleming of Grand Rapids as Mr. Samsa; senior Rachael Smith
of Nunica as Mrs. Samsa; junior Angella Huddleston of
Romeoville, Ill., as Greta; junior Drew McCulley of Fanwood,
N.J., as the Chief Clerk and a Lodger; and sophomores Aaron
Keck of Lansing and Michelle Rynbrandt of Clio as Lodgers.
Scenic design is by Richard Smith, professor of
  theatre; props designer is junior
Katherine Drop of Iowa City, Iowa; costume design by
Michelle Bombe, associate professor of theatre; lighting by
Perry Landes, associate professor of theatre; sound designer
is senior Geoff Abbas of Rochester, N.Y.
Tickets are on sale at the theatre lobby ticket
office of the DeWitt Center, which may be called at (616)
395-7890.  The ticket office is open Monday through Friday
  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for Hope College
faculty and staff, and $4 for all students.  The DeWitt
Center is located at 12th Street and Columbia Avenue in
