Students Chosen for Pew Younger
Scholars Summer Seminars

Posted April 11, 2000

HOLLAND -- The Pew Younger Scholars Program has
announced that three Hope students have been chosen as
participants in summer seminars at the University of Notre
  Dame.
The students are juniors Tim Cupery of Harbor
Beach, Kyla Moore of Kenosha, Wis., and Whitney Schraw of
Boyne City.  The seminars will run from Tuesday, May 30,
  through Friday, June 20.
Cupery, who is pursuing a major in sociology, will
be one of seven students in a seminar on the social dynamics
of religious organizations led by Professor Roger Finke of
  Purdue University.
Moore, an English and psychology double major,
will work with Professor Laura Knoppers of Penn State
University in a seminar titled "Reading Monsters."
Schraw, who has majors in both history and
economics, will participate in the seminar "Freedom, Markets
and Economic Justice," led by Professor Glen Loury of Boston
  College.
All three students are members of the Hope Pew
Society, one of 15 such organizations at Christian colleges
in the United States.  The purpose of the Hope Pew Society
is to challenge some of the college's most academically
successful students with a vision of college and especially
university teaching careers as avenues to Christian service,
and to help these students gain admission to Ph.D. programs
  at major universities.
