History

Hope's history curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, research, clarity of expression in both speech and writing, attention to ethical values, and respect for alternative traditions.

Faculty members are active scholars with established reputations in their fields of specialty.
Books and articles written by department faculty members are used in college history courses nationwide.
Faculty members teaching in the department have lived and traveled in Argentina, Austria, Cameroon, China, Costa Rica, Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Kenya, Russia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo, among other nations. Their extensive international experience assures currency in scholarship and vitality in the classroom.
Students have opportunities to study and take advantage of internships locally and regionally, in such major U.S. cities as Chicago [2], New York [3], Philadelphia [4] and Washington, D.C. [5], and in countries such as Austria [6], Australia [7], France [8], Germany [9], Italy [10], Japan [11] and Russia [12]. Students can engage in independent research and collaborative research with faculty members.
