Awards for outstanding performances during the 2002 football season have been announced by the coaching staff. Named the team's most valuable offensive player was junior quarterback Phil Butler of Howard City, Mich. (Tri-County HS) while the most valuable defensive player award was presented to junior linebacker Matt Beaver of Gladwin, Mich. (Gladwin HS).
Butler established several single season passing records, completing 225-of-411 passes for 3,037 yards and 31 touchdowns. He will enter the 2003 season already holding all of Hope's career passing records (384/700/5,193 yards/54 touchdowns).
Beaver led the team in tackles (108), including 56 solos. He had two quarterback sacks, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble.
The Allen C. Kinney Award was presented to senior Jason Helsen of Ravenna, Mich. (Ravenna HS). The award, presented annually since 1971, is presented to a senior player for maximum contribution to the football program. It is named in memory of Allen Kinney, a member of the Hope football team who died of cancer in his senior year in 1967.
