Hope College will present a Distinguished Service Award to Professor Jose Alfredo Zepeda Garrido, rector of the Autonomous University of Queretaro in Mexico, during the college's Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 9.
Zepeda is being honored for his support of the
exchange program between Hope and the university, and for
his contributions to the development of cross-cultural
understanding through educational exchanges.
"Rector Zepeda is a distinguished scholar and has
been a very successful leader of the Autonomous University
of Queretaro," said Dr. John H. Jacobson, president of Hope
College. "He has been instrumental in forging ties both
with Hope College and with the city of Holland, and we are
very pleased to be able to honor him at our Commencement
Hope and the Autonomous University of Queretaro
established a formal academic exchange program in 1996. In

Zepeda has been rector of the Autonomous
University of Queretaro since 1994. A 1979 graduate of the
university, he earned a master's degree in engineering from
the National Autonomous University of Mexico. After working
as an engineer, he joined the faculty of engineering at the
Autonomous University of Queretaro, holding a succession of
leadership positions in the years since.
