College Level Examination Program

Taking a CLEP exam?
Prepare for your CLEP exam with the Official Study Guide.
The CLEP exam is offered to Hope students by appointment during the academic year. The exam is a computer based exam given via an internet link with Educational Testing Service. Scores will be scored immediately using this link.

Students who have had excellent preparation in one of the subject areas below may wish to register for the exam. Students who score at or above the cut-off level indicated on the chart will be granted credit toward their degree, and, in many cases, will fulfill core requirements as well.

  • Hope College is a limited testing site which means only current Hope Students may be tested. For a list of open testing sites, follow this link to the CLEP website.
  • There is a $96.00 fee to take the exam. (Effective July 1, 2012)
  • Students must complete a CLEP registration form (pdf, online form) and make an appointment with the Registrar's Office to take their exam. Exams are given by appointment only.
  • Tests are a computer based exam using a direct internet link to ETS. Therefore, scores are available upon completion of the exam, except the College Composition exam which takes 4 to 6 weeks to be scored by ETS.

*The language exams have one exam for the first and second year. Credit is granted based on score and course completed. For example, a score of 50 on the French exam gives the possibility of earning 8 credits (101 & 102). However, if credit has already been earned for 102, only 4 hours will be granted (101). Likewise, a score of 62 on the same exam will give the potential for 16 hours of credit, less credit already earned for any of the courses.
