LOCATION 2: COLUMBIA AVENUE AT
11TH STREET

Columbia Cottage and The Maas Center
The building that stood where Graves Hall now stands was moved to this location when Graves was constructed in 1893-94. It was a one-story brick building that served as the De Hope printing house. In 1929, it was remodeled and a second story was added for the new home of the Hope Preparatory School. The prep school closed in 1938. It was demolished in 1981 to make way for the Maas Conference Center which was completed in 1986. The building is a gift of Leonard and Marjorie Maas and sons, and is one of the principal gathering sites for campus events.

Phelps Hall

Named for Hope's first president, Dr. Philip Phelps, this building was built in 1960. It is a student residence that, after its cafeteria and dining room were enlarged in 1979, contains the main dining facility of the college.

Location 3: Lawn between Phelps and Lubbers Hall
