A 256-page illustrated volume that celebrates the life of the founder of Holland, Michigan and Hope College, the Reverend Albertus C. Van Raalte, and presents his vision for the future as it has been realized 150 years later.

Authored by Dr. Jeanne M. Jacobson, Senior Research Fellow, A.C. Van Raalte Institute; Dr. Elton J. Bruins, Director of the A. C. Van Raalte Institute, 1994-2002; and Larry J. Wagenaar, Director of the Joint Archives of Holland, 1988-2001.

Dutch Leader and American Patriot

  • suffered persecution and imprisonment for his religious beliefs,
  • with wife and five children endured stormy voyage to America,
  • led his emigrant band into forests of the new state of Michigan,
  • founded a colony there in 1847 and named it Holland,
  • led his congregation and preached faithfully,
  • worked tirelessly for the cause of education,
  • devised ways for the colony to govern itself,
  • led the rebuilding of Holland after its devastation by fire in 1871,
  • rejoiced in being an American.
