Move In

FALL SEMESTER NEW STUDENT MOVE-IN

We are excited to welcome you to campus on Friday, August 25, 2023!

Signing Up for Move-in Time
If you haven’t signed up for a move-in time, please do this by Wednesday, August 23.

  • To choose your move-in time, log into your Hope Housing Portal. Under “Assignments,” select “Fall 2023.” Choose your time slot from the drop-down menu, and hit “Update My Time” to confirm.

Checking In and Getting Materials
To check in and get your room key and Orientation materials, you will go to one of two tents:

  • For Cook, Durfee, Dykstra, Gilmore, Phelps and Voorhees, check-in at the tent in front of the Jack H Miller Music building (A on the Move-In Day Map).
  • For Kollen, Lichty, Scott, VanVleck, Wyckoff and cottages/apartments, check-in at the tent by the flagpole in front of the DeWitt Center (B on the Move-In Day Map).

Please have any form of photo ID and your Hope College login information to check in!

At this tent, you will be asked to complete a check-in form on your Hope Housing Portal. Make sure you know your Hope College login information!

Traffic, Parking and Unloading
There are two main streets that provide access to the residential halls — 10th and 13th streets. To facilitate easy unloading, we will be making these streets one way and restricting access. 10th Street will flow west from Columbia to College Ave. and 13th Street will flow east from College to Columbia Ave. Please see the Move-In Day Map

During your move-in time, you will be directed to the appropriate unloading zone for the community in which you are living. Orientation assistants (OAs) in orange shirts will work quickly and diligently to unload your car with minimal work on your part. Make sure that all your belongings are labeled with your name, residence hall and room number. This way the OAs will make sure belongings go where they need to go! Once your vehicle is unloaded, please move it to a parking lot east of Columbia Ave.

Getting Your Key
If you are living in a residence hall you will need to go to the check-in tent assigned for your location.

  • For Cook, Durfee, Dykstra, Gilmore, Phelps, and Voorhees, check-in at the tent in front of the Jack H Miller Music building (A on the Move-In Map).

  • For Kollen, Lichty, Scott, VanVleck, Wyckoff, and cottages/apartments with keys (see below), check-in at the tent by the flagpole in front of the DeWitt Center (B on the Move-In Map).

If you arrive after 3 p.m., please go to your residence hall and call the on-call number posted on the main entry. A member of the Residential Life staff will get you checked in and give you your key.

Most cottages and apartments are accessed using a code. If you live in a cottage or apartment with a code, your access code will be found in your Hope Housing Portal under “Messages” the day of your scheduled arrival. When you arrive on campus, go straight to your residence and fill out the check-in form in your Housing Portal to let us know you have arrived (log into your portal, select “Apps & Forms” in the left column, select “Check-In (Fall 2023)”).

If you do not have an access code in your Housing Portal, it may be because the cottage or apartment uses your student ID or a key for entry.

  • If you live in Cook Village, College East, 47 E 13th, 55 E 14th, DeYoung, Loraine-Lubbers, Strand or Zoetewey, you will use your student ID and PIN to access your home. When you arrive on campus, go straight to your residence and fill out the check-in form in your Housing Portal to let us know you have arrived (QR code will be posted on your door).

  • If you live in 364-366-368 Triplex, Blue Cottage, Fairbanks Cottage, Gazelle, Green Apartments, Kraker Annex, Nykamp, Oggel, Ross Apartments or Treehouse, you will need to go to the tent in front of the DeWitt Center to check in and get your cottage/apartment keys. If you arrive on campus after 3 p.m., your keys will be available to pick up at Campus Safety.

Traffic and Unloading
There will be a lot of you unloading cars in a small area at the same time. Whether you are living in a hall, cottage or apartment, please unload your car and move your car to a parking lot away from your housing to allow for others to unload. To facilitate this, 10th street will be closed and flowing west from Columbia to College Ave.

If you live in a residence hall, you will also get a parking pass to put on your dashboard that corresponds to your move-in time. This will help us keep traffic following and communicate with you if your car needs to be moved.

Hope is a residential college, so students are required to live on campus for their first three years. Through your residential experience, you’ll grow within your community, learn what it means to be a good neighbor in a global society and develop skills to prepare you for independent living post-graduation.

As you learn, develop and grow in and outside of the classroom, your Hope housing options grow with you. You’ll start off living in highly communal residence halls your first and second years, then move to more independent but college-supported cottages and apartment living during your junior and senior years. Our housing options provide places where you can anchor yourself throughout your college journey.
