AADAS 2007:  Dutch-American Arts and Letters

Sixteenth Biennial Conference
Sponsored by the A.C. Van Raalte Institute, Hope College
Thursday, June 7, through Saturday, June 9, 2007

The Association for the Advancement of Dutch-American Studies (AADAS) held its Sixteenth Biennial Conference at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, in picturesque southwest Michigan on June 7-9, 2007 (Thursday-Saturday).

The conference featured the ethnic literature and art of Dutch Calvinists in North America, a strong and distinctive subculture since the 1840s. The featured speaker after the Friday evening dinner was Chris Stoffel Overvoorde, Professor of Art Emeritus at Calvin College and a master historical and landscape painter. He described his research methods and blending of images and themes in the creation of renowned historical paintings—the 1976 (Dutch) American Bicentennial series, the LaGrave Christian Reformed Church Centennial in 1997, the Calvin College dormitory paintings of 1989, and the 150 th Anniversary of the Christian Reformed Church of 2007.

The Seventeenth Biennial AADAS Conference will be held at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Canada, in June 2009.  More information will be forthcoming.
