Dr. Peaslee's Research

Dr. Peaslee's research group is examining the chemical properties of the Lake Macatawa watershed. An attempt is being made to determine the origin, transport and fate of phosphorus within the watershed, which is the principle element that causes the lake to become hypereutrophic. The approach is to look at sediment history of the lake to establish baseline levels of various elements, and to measure fluxes into the lake. His group is also exploring fractionation of the phosphorus within the sediment to answer the important question of how much deposited phosphorus is available to the surface waters through a process of resuspension.
