Major at Hope: Chemistry

What do you find exciting or interesting about your major?

I find that studying chemistry is interesting because one learns about the elemental components that make up many compounds we are exposed to on a day to day basis. The chemistry field also has many areas where one can participate in research. Also, chemistry has many areas where one can participate in research and there are many practical applications for the concepts one learns.

What are your career plans at this time?

I would like to become a doctor in pediatrics or geriatrics.

Describe your summer research project.

I am working with Dr. Fu this summer. We are synthesizing mycosporine-like compounds. Marine plants and organisms use mycosporine compounds to protect themselves against UV radiation. We will be attaching different aromatic groups to the compounds we synthesize to determine which compound provides the greatest yeild and the best protection against UV radiation. The synthesized compound can then be used as a protection against UV radiation even for humans.

What are some of your favorite activities outside of your school work?

I enjoy biking, reading, hiking, swimming, volunteering, and spending time with friends.

What were some influences on your decision to attend Hope?

I was very impressed with the willingness the faculty and staff showed toward helping me to reach my career goals. I also liked the small college and Christian atmosphere.
