Evan Arendsen

Community College: Grand Rapids Community College

Hometown: Zeeland, MI

High School: Holland Christian High School

Major at Hope: Geology major, Environmental Science Minor

What do you find exciting or interesting about your major?

Learning about the history of the Earth fascinates me. There is still much about the Earth's history that we do not know. I really enjoy learning how the Earth's structure became what it is now, as well as how the processes of the Earth work.

What are your career plans at this time?

I hope to find a job after I graduate working with a mapping program called GIS (geographic information systems).

Describe your summer research project.

For summer research last year, I worked with the grounds department at Hope. I helped them map some of their utilities, like underground water mains, power lines, and communication lines, that had not been mapped yet. I learned how to collect points with a high end GPS unit and put them on GIS. I would use the collected points fo make a map that they could use when digging in that area. They will refer to the map so that they do not accidentally dig up any undergound cables. .

What are some of your favorite activities outside of your school work?

I am part of one of the Worship Teams that plays in chapel as well as the Gathering on Sunday nights. It is nice to have an activity to take my focus from school for awhile each week.

What were some influences on your decision to attend Hope?

Well, the S-STEM scholarship definitely made my wishes to attend Hope possible. Other than that, I really wanted to be part of the Worship Band here at Hope. Finally, having small classes where it is easy to get to know everyone, including your profs, is great. It was something I was really looking for in a College.
