Every year, native teaching assistants from France, Germany, Japan and Spain spend
the academic year with Hope students.
They teach conversation classes, offer tutoring, organize events for the department, live in the language houses, share their knowledge of the home culture and develop deep bonds with Hope students.
Meet Our Native Teaching Assistants
RACHEL SOUCAZE | FRENCH
My name is Rachel and I am 23 years old. I spent my childhood near Paris and then I went to Nantes (in France too) for studying. I have a master’s degree in Sociology. I am very excited to come to Hope ! It will be the first time I have crossed the ocean! I like travelling and I am glad to spend some time in America to meet people and to discover the country. I will do my best for answering all your questions about France and if you wish to talk, do not hesitate.
SENNIKA APEL | GERMAN
My name is Sennika and I am 23 years old. I am studying business education & human resource as well as English at the University of Goettingen in Germany. Before I have started my study I successfully completed my apprenticeship as a bank clerk. During my leisure time I enjoy reading books, swimming, meeting friends and cooking with them as well as watching series. It is my first time in the U.S. and I am excited to spend my year at Hope College. I think it will be a great experience to work as a language assistant and to meet so many new people. I am looking forward to meeting you all and getting to know the American way of life.
NAOTO EDA | JAPANESE
Hello! My name is Naoto Eda. I'm from Shizuoka, Japan. I grew up by Mt. Fuji. I went to Hope as an exchange student from Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo almost three years ago. I immediately fell in love with Hope that's why I decided to come back as a full time student. One of the reasons i came back to hope is an amazing Japanese community here. Everyone is welcome! I am so excited to share this community with you!
TOMÁS FERNÁNDEZ-ABREVAYA | SPANISH
Hi! My name is Tomás and I'm 26 years old. I have a university degree as a Literary Editor and I finished attending classes to become a Licenciado en Letras (a Bachellor's Degree in Literature). I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I've been working at IES Abroad since 2011. One of the things I enjoy the most is traveling and reading. I also played the violin in several orchestras and I love dancing Tango (though I'm not very good at it). I can't wait to be in Hope College and learn the American Student's way of life. I also can't wait to spread my passion of the Spanish language among the students!
