Every year, native teaching assistants from France, Germany, Japan and Spain spend
the academic year with Hope students.
They teach conversation classes, offer tutoring, organize events for the department, live in the language houses, share their knowledge of the home culture and develop deep bonds with Hope students.
Meet Our Native Teaching Assistants
- Aurelie Caillard | French
My name is Aurélie, I am 22 years old and I live near Nantes in France. I just finished my bachelor's degree in English and after this year at Hope, I will start a master's degree in education to teach English in high school. I love travelling and discovering new places. I have been an AuPair three summers in a row, twice in Australia and once in the UK. I am a very open-minded person, and I hope I will meet a lot of amazing people here. During my free time, I like watching TV shows, spending time with my friends and walking around discovering new places. Don’t hesitate to come by the French House during the year, I’ll be glad to meet you and show you everything about my beautiful country!
- Lea Vehling | German
Hi! My name is Lea and I am 20 years old. I study German and Geography at the University of Goettingen in Germany and now I am studying one year abroad at Hope College.
I like to use every single minute of my free time for travelling the world. For example, last year I travelled Sri Lanka by backpacking and it has been a big adventure. I think Hope College is going to be a big adventure, too, and I am looking forward to get to know the American way of life and meeting great people.
Also I am looking forward to being a language assistant, because I have already worked with a German-class of refugees for an integration program in my hometown. I am excited to work with students who can already speak German a little bit. I think the time at Hope College is going to be great!
- Yuka Kojima | Japanese
My name is Yuka Kojima. I’m from Yokohama, Japan. I am majoring in communication and minoring in Chinese. After I studied at Japanese University for two years, I came to Hope College as an exchange student in 2014. Immediately, I fell in love with people and community at Hope College so I decided to transfer from Japanese University! I love meeting with people and learning foreign languages and culture. So I’m really excited to study Japanese and share beautiful culture with you.
- Beatriz Aguilar | Spanish
Hi! My name is Bea and I am 22 years old. I am from Madrid (Spain) and I am currently in my last year of a BA in English studies. As part of an exchange program, I studied at the University of Birmingham in the UK, which was an eye-opening and wonderful experience. I enjoy studying languages the same way as teaching them, as I find both of them to be important for language acquisition. I am very interested in American and British literature, and reading is one of my hobbies. Going to the movies is my favorite sport (I know it is not an actual sport, but it should be) and watching series and TV shows is my life. I love travelling and learning from other cultures. Even though I have never been in the U.S. before, I expect this year at Hope to be a great experience not only for me but for you too. Cannot wait to meet all of you!
